I have a French last name, and my family came to southern LA centuries ago, but we aren't "Cajuns". They came directly from France/Germany to southern LA. Also, my last name was German, but translated to French upon arrival in Louisiana. Ancestors from the Alsace Lorraine region of France/Germany.

Got some of them, too.

Poor Alsace-Lorraine was always in a tug of war between the French and Germans.

Same here. We were known as "Americains".

This is where we differ. My ancestors are from the town of Magalas, which is Southern France.

Rumors are, that it is possible that my ancestors were Jewish. The reason being, is that there was a Jewish purge in France around the time my family migrated, and one of the families that came from france and settled in the same small town as my ancestors, were themselves Jewish.

my grandfather (when he died last year) still had an active govt license to produce moonshine. He got it in the 70s during the OPEC gas embargo to make "gasohol" for his farm equipment...riiight

My great grandfather murdered my great grandmother which split up my grandmother and her 6 siblings at a young age. It took my grandmother a few decades to find them all once they all became adults.

Another family member is a descendant of Dudley LeBlanc, the Hadacol guy. It’s interesting to hear that people on TD still remember hadacol and what a big deal it was back in the day.

For some reason, I remember my parents telling me I was a descendant of Davey Crockett, but I’m pretty sure it was all bullshite just to get me to wear a coonskin cap and go and play outside.

My Dad was a New Orleans Police Officer. When the 1984 World's Fair was over and construction crews were removing/dismantling the mono-rail my Dad and his partner were assigned to the detail patrolling the area. A crane was lifting one of the rail sections and the rigging popped. The beam fell 40ft, landing on top of the police car. My Dad's partner was injured pretty bad. Nearly lost his left leg. Left ring finger was dismembered which my Dad went back to retrieve afterwards to get his partner's wedding ring. He made it through after many surgeries and therapy but was permanently disabled.

The beam crushed the roof of the car in and missed my Dad's head by fractions of an inch. The experience and trauma severely affected my Dad and he needed years of psychotherapy to come to grips with it. He had blamed himself for it all because his partner wanted to have one more cup of coffee while on their lunch break but my dad pressured him to get back to work.

I was 8 when it happened. Learned about it while watching TV with my mom and it was on the noon news but they didn't mention the names of the officers involved. My mom got the call shortly after and went to the hospital to be with them...

Just one of several crazy stories from my past.

Hilter Youth

thats pretty damn cool. One of my grandfathers brothers served in the Battle of Bulge and came home with a war bride from Germany. She (great-aunt Geisla) was a member of the Hitler Youth & was training to swim for Germany at the next olympic games.

my moms uncle was the MP who guarded göring during the nuremburg trials. apparently they were friendly and when he died, there was legit controversy over whether or not he slipped him the cyanide. he was vindicated back in like the mid 2000s i believe

Interesting, indeed.

IIRC, as the story goes Goring tried to befriend him by talking with him about hunting- a common interest. I remember reading that those who were around Goring after his capture described him as being "deceptively charming."

Pretty cool looking at our family tree to pick baby names for our son due in September and seeing him on it.

You and I are related then because I am also a direct relative of Jim Bowie.

I was 9 when this happened. My dad was in DOTD weight enforcement and thus had some info about that incident through LEO channels.
He showed us where it happened when we went down a few months after the incident. Crazy shite. I remember it well.

Interesting. I'm pretty sure we're from the Mulhouse area. Not 100% on that, and they moved around a little bit before coming here, but it was in that general area. At some points they were in what is now considered Germany, too.

Well, my mom traced our lineage all the way back to a South Carolina Cherokee woman in the 1700s.

I have an ancestor on my mother’s side who was from Bordeaux, France. His name was Jacob de Lesaux. He settled in Charleston, SC in the 1720 or there abouts and changed his name to Jacob Dillashaw.

The odd part of all this is at that time France and Great Britian were bitter enemies. Him moving to South Carolina then would be like someone today moving to Iran or North Korea. I’ve mever been able to find out why he moved but it was either he was in some sort of criminal trouble in France or was mixed up in piracy which was rampant at that time.
