quote:

Two fishermen in southeast Oklahoma unexpectedly caught a 4-foot long, roughly 100-pound alligator snapping turtle earlier this month.

Fishing with a trotline on Saturday morning, Jonathan Van Fleet and Anthony Dover came across the turtle which, according to the Oklahoma Game Warden, “found itself in a rather peculiar situation by munching on one of the sunfish used as bait.”

quote:

It's unclear exactly how old this particular turtle is, but alligator snapping turtles usually live to the ages of between 80 and 120.

quote:

“It is advised that you use caution when dealing with them. The bite from a turtle this large can easily remove a finger, or even your hand,” the Oklahoma Game Warden said.

See this thread for finger found in snapping turtle.

If I were to catch something like that, knowing its potential age due to the size of it, I'd have to let it go.

To think that turtle is potentially old enough to have been around when the 1900's started is enough for me to give it a pass and not make a big pot of turtle soup.

It'd be easier to tell how large it was if someone put their foot in the pic.

That turtle doesn't look 100 pounds to me.

My son saw this one chilling on a creek bank at a friend's camp in Ms a couple years ago, so I climbed down and caught it. It looks to be similar in size and I don't think mine was near 100 pounds.

The alligator snapping turtle is listed as threatened in the US, and is completely gone from some states

I worked at LDWF in Baton Rouge while in school. Some guy showed up in the parking lot one day with an alligator snapping turtle he caught in the river near angola. Its shell touched both of the wheel wells inside the bed at the same time.

Biologist said it was alive during the Civil War.

Guy said he felt like shite keeping it. He wanted to put it back where he caught it, but the turtle had swallowed the hook and was going to die from the damage.

It was prehistoric looking. an absolute dinosaur.

My cousin holding my new pet

Put it on a scale weight was right under 150. Wish I would’ve take better pics. This turtle went through hell in its life time. He had numerous hooks in him. And I think we counted 4 holes in him that we pretty sure was from a .22 cal

No it's not, but several states have banned the take of alligator snapping turtles, and it's status is under review by USFWS.
