I saw on the Brewers website that they would get the 22nd pick next year if Turang doesn't sign. Not sure how legitimate that is though
I don't think so, but MLB draft is so different than others. I thought they'd get a compensatory pick following round 1 before round 2

I think the education is a non-issue. The guy isn't coming to LSU (or any school) to get an education. He's coming to play baseball. Which is fine.
You have no idea. Some kids place an education higher than playing baseball. Some kids just want to go and experience college life. Baseball won't carry him for the rest of his life unless he not only makes it to the bigs but sustains a very good MLB career.
With all that said and done, I think he takes the money, min of 3 mill is awfully hard to pass up

Did we ever figure out if Turang would be a draft eligible SO? Like I mentioned in the other thread, I'm way more optimistic of him coming if he only has to stay 2 years.

More appropriate: Official watch of Turang to sign with the pro. He just uses LSU to get more leverage for the bonus money.

This hasn't really been true of any kid or any school in a very long time.
But it doesn't stop the people that don't pay attention from trotting out this tired talking point every single year.

He would not be draft eligible after Sophomore year, so he'd have to be on campus for 3 years.

I'm not a tax expert but if he gets the 3.5 million signing bonus in one lump sum up front, wouldn't it be subject to federal income tax of 39.6 % plus state income tax from the state he resides in?

this dude is not turning down $3M.

Just saw Levi Kelly's signing come across twitter. He signed for $350k. Close to double his slot value.

Not life changing money. Hopefully for his sake he takes college courses while playing in minors.

Great thread.
My fear is that Turang gets his money and Ole Miss gets a beast of an OF

Not quite. 2018 Tax brackets would put him at 37% but only on whatever is over 500k
And sports contracts are different and are taxed on where earned (so if you play for the Astros (no state income tax) but play at Chicago, that pay will be docked illinois income tax)
But signing bonuses have different rules and may go to state of residency... Which California is much higher topping out at 13.1% over Wisconsin's 7.65%
Super exciting tax information specifically about mlb signing bonuses

I never get comments like this. I’m pretty sure that he can take “not life changing money” and afford four years at just about wherever he wants sub Ivy League level whenever he’s done with ball. I’m surprised as many kids make it campus as there are.
I mean think about your LSU time. What if someone had told you “hey come play ball for four years and I’ll give you $350,000 up front and then pay you a wage and expenses while you play and then if it doesn’t work out you can keep the money and go to LSU later.
I’m pretty sure he’s making a sound decision “for his sake”.

If Turang's parents are well off, it does change things. How much? I think it depends on how much they want him to have the college experience. Sometimes, that means exactly what it says. Often, it's another way of saying they want him to mature some before he's unleashed on the world with several million dollars available on his debit card.

The wage is barely equal to minimum wage and they don’t pay expenses. In the minors, you live off your signing bonus
