I’ve spent a lot of time in the northeast lately and shite like holding doors open, saying “yes ma’am/sir”, and letting people go before you in line is unfathomable to them. I had some old lady act like I just brought her dog back to life when I held the door for her. The difference in cultures is shocking.

It's because they're better than you.

If you make eye contact with people in public and greet them/say hello, they tend to give you a suspicious look & think you want something from them. That was my biggest adjustment moving down here after growing up up north. I wasn't used to so many random people saying hello in the grocery store. Now, when I go back to visit, I feel like the most outgoing MFer alive because I forget not to make eye contact.

This isn't "common courtesy". This is a colloquialism that is prevailing in the South.

holding doors open,

Why should someone hold the door open for you?

letting people go before you in line

Sounds like you're a sucker.

I actually spent a significant amount of time in New England; Massachusetts, Connecticut, and New Jersey (I know NJ isn’t considered NE) and Although you meet assholes everywhere, I didn’t find any of them to be as rude as Cajuns (particularly the older crabby women) in Louisiana.

All of those states had more agreeable people and are more welcoming than Louisiana, especially if you’re an outsider.

That can happen from time to time, but for the most part people don't have much of a reaction up here whenever I do the same things.

Most people in the northeast are very nice people, it's just a different kind of nice. Things that might be considered curt in the south are normal here, but there's no rudeness or disrespect meant by it.

They're trapped inside 6 months a year wtf do you expect?

That said they're generally very open to conversation. I've met some extremely nice people in the northeast. Just wear an LSU shirt and people are friendly everywhere.

My wife is originally from Michigan and tells me how rude everybody is in comparison.

She had a small cousin I believe whose family also came down that saw everybody waving when they were out driving and asked "Why is everybody raising their hand when they pass us?"

Blew her mind. She started waving at every car she saw.

this is absolutely meaningless except that it means you've been programmed to do it. That junk needs to go away bc it's more retarded than anything. if someone doesn't say it and it bothers you, that's bc of your own ignorance and pride. opening or holding a door is practical; sir and ma'am are meaningless.

Lies. This happens everywhere it's not just the north. The north also has tons of small laid back country places as well.

I hold the door for anyone behind me, even if I have to wait a min, I still say please and thank you, I am beyond grateful for everything I have and have earned from my hard work ethic and values in life.

I'm from the North, I'm 30 (so grouped in with the younger turds) and have been around this country and world.

Me and some buddies stopped in a bar to eat in Montana last November. The lady working there was an older than us gal, maybe mid to late 50’s. She immediately knew we were southern because the first question she asked we said no ma’am...lol. She said, “you southern men and your ma’ams and sirs.”

My first trip to Boston I was by myself killing some time and was in an empty bar, I approached the bartender and said "can I start a tab?", as in, opposed to having to pay for each drink at a time since some places are different. He looks me dead in the eye and goes "you gonna buy something?"

It was then I knew it was a bit of a less hospitable region than I was used to.

In the South, everyone likes you until you give them a reason not to.

In the North, no one likes you until you give them a reason to.

All I know is that I would have slayed poon in the northeast, particularly Philly, with my mix of down the bayou and country accent

I’m heading to NYC for the first time in a few weeks, will report back how it goes over there

Plus I have been complimented on my manners/courtesy many times
