For a trip like this I would probably just go to Asheville and drink beer, eat, and do some outdoor stuff in the Smokeys.
Wine country neat Napa would be nice too

i honestly think New York City and Washington DC are the 2 places every american should visit once in their lives.

They are relatively close together and travel between the 2 is convenient.

Aside from that, some sort of trip that encompasses yellowstone, grand teton, bryce national parks, etc.

Boston up to Maine (Acadia National Park) and/or down to Rhode Island (Newport) is a nice trip

Fly in to San Diego, get a rental car, drive up the Pacific Coast Highway to the Napa Valley taking a few days to see the sights along the way, spend a few days in wine country, wind up in San Francisco and fly home from there. I have done some version of this a few times. I would say that that is my favorite vacation in the U.S.

Some lazy arse threads in the Travel Board lately. Do your own research. How do we know what you like?

While, you’re at it Travel Board, recommend a dinner I would like and what to order.

From the sounds of it, a bag of penises in your mouth. Grilled.

Is this for historical purposes (DC, Philly, NYC) or great scenic views (Glacier, Grand Canyon, Yellowstone). If it’s for fun, Key West.

California. Fly into LA, San Fran, or San Diego, rent a car.

This was a fun road trip for me and my son last year for his high school graduation present over Spring Break. Flew into San Diego. Hung out there and Coronado for a few days. Drove up to LA. Did that for 3 days. Then drove to Phoenix to watch the Texas Rangers play some Srping ball. He is a big Rangers fan...

Also a Washington DC and surrounding area trip is cool.

Make a loop taking ferries north from Seattle to San Juan Island, Orcas Island and/or Victoria and back down south to Olympic NP

Given the OP's parameters (28, kids at home, 3-4 days, reasonably priced) this is probably the best recommendation in the thread, assuming he is within 6 hours driving of Asheville or can fly.

Lots of other great suggestions, just not on that time frame or at a reasonable price.

Location of OP and season of trip would help too.

Good idea for a thread though, everyone can benefit from learning what the top non cliche trips there are in this great country. So much out there to do.
