Best overall vacation that is not the cliche beach, cruise, etc. somewhere like Niagara Falls, Grand Canyon, DC. Trying to plan a reasonably priced trip to see some cool sights in America, suggestions? TIA

For a road trip it's hard to beat the southwest.

Niagara Falls is a day trip while on business in Buffalo, not a basis for a family vacation, in my humble opinion.

How are we supposed to know what you like?

No kids, just a weekend trip for the wife and myself. 3 night trip

A roadtrip out west where you hit all the big national parks.

An authentic mountain vacation in Pigeon Forge. All the mini golf your heart desires. And the cost includes scenery and wildlife fun. You’ll think you’re in the Swiss Alps.

Yellowstone or Redwood

California. Fly into LA, San Fran, or San Diego, rent a car. Plenty to see/do within a few hours drive of each of those places.
Who’s going on the trip? Ages?

Fly into San Francisco. Rent a car and head to Napa. Also, check out the Monterey Penninsula.

Take the drive from Denver to Salt Lake via Moab Utah. Beautiful country out there.

Just got back from a DC trip so I am going to say there.
Everyone needs to visit Arlington Cemetery at least once in their life to witness the Changing of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown soldier. Unreal experience!
Do a tour of the monuments to hear their back story from your guide.
All the Smithsonian museums are free. Can’t get cheaper than that.
Metro is cheap as well as Uber. For a family of 5, we spent less than $100 on transportation for a 5 day stay.
Food is pricey but manageable.

For a road trip it's hard to beat the southwest.
Though if you want to see niagra, west and upstate New York are neat and not as well known to most in the south. Same with the mountains of Pennsylvania.
But if you wanted bang for buck and low cost. Do this road trip.
Fly into Denver, Vegas, Albuquerque. (Probably Vegas as cheapest car rentals)
You'll see the Grand Canyon, painted dessert, new Mexico plains, the start of the rockies, the Rocky Mountains park. Then taking I70 which from Denver to grand junction is the most scenic interstate, you go to Utah. Make your way to zion canyon and Bryce Canyon. Then to the north rim of the grandcanyon before stopping at the hoover dam and a day in Vegas.
