Why does everyone ignore the Red Flags in Destin?

OKALOOSA ISLAND — Mitchell Toups knew he had gone out too far when a wave picked him off of his feet and sucked him farther into the Gulf of Mexico.
This was the news today about another near victim just asking to dedicate his life to the old man in the sea. Mr Toups of Houma La was very lucky that a life guard plucked his arse out of the gulf but had he not been around neither would Mr. Toups. Red flag means danger. And Double Red means stay out. The flags flying today was double red and yet he elected to swim in the gulf. Take care of yourself and your family and please be careful this summer.

I haven’t a clue. I’ll ask the cabana boy that looks after my beach house and get back to you.

Is it farther or further? Or both?
Farther relates to distance. Further relates to degree.

Should lifeguards risk their lives when it is double red flags out?
IMO, I think they still should, however, anyone caught swimming out far enough should be ticketed.

Some people legitimately have no regard for authority or warnings, whether stupidity or arrogance.

When there is a Double Red Flag (illegal to enter water) in OBAL the surf rescue staff are not supposed to enter the water to assist. It is considered too dangerous for them and the city has determined they'd rather not have their employee die attempting the rescue.

I'm in Destin and the life guards spent all week blowing their whistle to people ignoring double reds. Some parents with their little kids were out there. Dumbasses.
Several stopped today and even though it was single red today was having people come in to knee deep only. There was a rip current right by us.
One told me that they had about 10 life guards for about 10k people on the beaches here. No clue if those numbers are accurate but that's what I was told. Also said they'd have several drownings already this season.
Idk that I could be paid enough to have that responsibility --- don't have enough patience for idiots.

When storms shut down entire ports, we go out. When hurricanes ground the United States Navy, we go out. And when the holy Lord himself reaches down from heaven and destroys his good work with winds that rip houses off the ground, We. Go. Out.....
......wait. This is the Coast Guard, not lifeguards. My bad.

I was in Ft Walton yesterday and an OT3 lifeguard pulled out someone....they weren't far out but there was a sandbar about 30 years out that must have messed her up.

they're too drunk to notice the red flags.

They're from Louisiana and can't read...

Mr Toups figured if he can make it down MLK or through dat new roundabout, what's two red flags on a beach gonna do.

When I was 24 I went out on a yellow flag. Had an inflatable boat and some plastic oars. Waves were kicking my butt, it was fun.
Until I got thrown out, boat was nowhere to be seen. I knew I was being sucked out. I also knew I had to swim strong or die. It took a while, but i made it in. I will never forget the feeling of that sand when I could touch bottom and walk. I went to the beach house exhausted and in tears.
I later found out my dad was watching me and had 911 on the phone. Coast guard was en route, but 20 minutes away. If that happened today my old arse would be dead. I was lucky
Respect the water, wherever you are

Similar story. Spring Break when I was at LSU, group of girls tossing a beach ball around and it went into the water and immediately started floating out. 10 beers brave, I grabbed a boogie board (luckily) and paddled out to get the ball. Big hero. I got to the ball, turned around and started in. It took about 30 seconds to realize I wasn’t getting back to the beach. The current was unreal. Within two minutes, the people on the beach were small dots and I realized that I might be going deep into the Gulf on a small piece of foam. Without the board I legit think I might have not made it. Someone ran and got a lifeguard and they had to come get me on a jetski. I have never been happier to see anyone than I was at that moment.
