That joke wasn’t funny when someone posted it yesterday either.

You want to reimburse me for my ocean view condo? I paid to go to the beach so dammit don’t tell me what to do.

Plus I gotta pee.

Yeah I have a very similar story but I was like 11 and it was a yellow flag. Boogie board saved my arse. Couple of people drowned that weekend. I’m still uncomfortable going over my head in the ocean to this day

I was in Destin this past weekend and same thing. Double red flags for two of the days and sure enough people are way out in the surf. Life guards drive down the beach and make everyone get out the water but as soon as he drives off they back in. These are fatties to so you know if the rip gets them they are gone.

Double red stay out. One red - brought to you by the same people that took away M-80s, public diving boards, and monkey bars.

I don't mess around with the ocean (or gulf) anymore. I had a couple close calls when I was younger. I love the beach, but if I want to go swimming, I'll go find a pool or lake.

Red flag means danger. And Double Red means stay out.

Not to the locals, double red means they finally get enough wave action to surf

When I was about 15, my family was on vacation in Acapulco. I was sitting on the beach near the surf and the waves would sweep in and pick you up and move you a couple of feet - it was pretty fun. After a few minutes of this, I was showing my Dad, when a big wave hit us both and sucked us out. As we were sliding down the beach another wave crashed over us and when we came up, we were probably 40 - 50 yards from shore and I couln't touch bottom.

We swam for a bit and every time I would get close - I could just get my toes into the sand - the waves would bring us out again.

After probably 10 - 15 minutes, I was dead tired and I seriously considered trying to swim out to a big rock that was a couple of hundred yards offshore. About that time, my Dad yelled "try to swim to shore!" He could barely get the words out...

A minute or two later, a Mexican lifeguard built like hulk hogan came out and grabbed both of us, yelled "'dis way" and dragged out of the rip, and in to the beach. I was pretty tired, but once he let go of me, I tried to play it cool and walked up to my towel. My mom asked what was wrong with my Dad, and when I turned around, he was laying like a beached whale trying to recover.

A few hours later, the red flags were up and we managed to translate a newspaper and realized there was a lunar eclipse happening and the riptides were out of control. They had boats out of the surf constantly plucking people out the rest of the day. We sat by the pool and watched the rescues - including a couple of sailboats that got capsized in the surf.

Watch those riptides baws!

This.

There is a pass West of Galveston that fisher-people wade on the reg. It has some unreal rip currents and most sane people know this but it never fails, San Luis Pass will claim 2 or 3 lives a year from someone wading it and drowning.

I went in a few times on double red this past weekend. Only about knee deep then I sat down and peed.

Unsurprising that a bunch of prima donna "alpha males" don't know how to handle themselves in rough surf

Everyone saying they got caught in a rip and tried fight it straight back into shore...you got lucky because that’s exactly how people drown in rips. You should swim perpendicular to the beach until you’re out of the rip, then swim back in. Or worst case scenario, just float and the current will loop around down the beach and put you closer to shore. What goes out must come in....and vice versus.

Should lifeguards risk their lives when it is double red flags out?

No they shouldn't. Similar to the way police/fire/EMTs wont save you during a hurricane if you ignore the mandatory evacuation
