I just told him last week to get a damn flipper. I've never been stuck, but he said it was the most painful thing he's experienced - and he's broken bones on a few occasions and just had rotator cuff surgery (and obviously suffers daily from those shitty tattoos). Said it swelled instantly. He went to the hospital and they pulled it out (he said it was 6 barbs deep). They gave him a tetanus shot, IV antibiotics, and an Rx for antibiotics.

Any of you baws ever been stuck? How bad was it?

Damn not that bad, but yeah I got stuck right in the center of my hand years ago. Its a different type of pain, that's for sure. And yeah it does hurt instantly

Been stuck more times than I care to remember. The worst was when I stepped on a dead catfish lying in the sand in Waveland as a kid. Luckily the whole barbed fin pulled out clean but it did hurt like hell and I too had to get a tetanus shot over it.

Old wives tale is to rub the side of the catfish over the wound and the slime from the fish will ease the pain----that don't work.....

Yeah the only other people I knew with bad sticks both stepped on dead ones on the beach. One damn near lost his foot, but he was an unhealthy guy with bad diabetes, making him much more susceptible to infection. He was in the hospital for several weeks.

The didn't think the pain isn't excruciating, but it does burn. I had a gaff top one time stick me in the side of my shoe. Felt pain, but kept fishing. About two minutes later my shoe felt heavy. Took my shoe off and it was full of blood. Guess the venom was an anti-coagulant.

When I was about 8 or 9 I caught a hard head and just left it on the dock for about 30 minutes in the sun. I got a bucket of water put the catfish in the bucket and tried to revive it. That SOB came to, wiggled right out my hand and stuck square in the center of my chest right on my sternum. I still to this day 32 years remember how bad that hurt.

I got stuck by a hard head wade fishing once, had to break the fin off then jerk it out with hemostats.

Hurt like hell and I had red streaks running up my arm for days.

Of course my dumb arse didn't go to the Dr

I caught one right underneath my thumbnail a couple years back. It swelled up and burned for several hours. I would compare it to getting hit real good by a few red wasps on steroids, just a throbbing burn that doesn’t quit.

Aw man. That wasn’t nothing for your son. He’s used to getting stuck by the tattoo needle.

Father of a guy I went to high school died due to complications associated with his immunity and a virus the hardhead he got stuck by. Apparently the virus was in water/on the catfish's skin/fin when he got stuck. He was also a diabetic so he possibly already had a weakened immune system.

12 yrs old was floundering in Grand Isle. I threw my gig at a dead hardhead on the beach and hit it...tried to use my tennis shoe to get it off and the barb went right through into the arch of my foot. Hurt like hell and for a few days it swelled up like I had a tennis ball on the bottom of my foot.

Kayaking one time I caught one unhooked it and immediately dropped it straight down and into my leg
Had to be at least 2-3 barbs deep. Once I yanked it out (was just chilling in my leg) the blood shot everywhere
Definitley hurt a lot

I forgot to mention that - he did say it bled like crazy.

Last night he told me the same thing. He said, “I’m never touching one of those things again - I’ll just cut the line.” Told him again to get a flipper, but with his luck he’ll flip it right up into his face.

I apologize for disparaging remarks about your son... but his tats are definitely the tattoo version of the infamous herp-a-derp bobcat taxidermy.

As for getting stuck, my friend threw a dead one at me when I was a kid, it stuck into my arse cheek and I didn’t sit right for a couple of weeks. Trying to sit on the toilet was impossible. He broke his arm riding his 3 wheeler a few days later. I laughed.

Was that a hardhead or freshwater cat?

A few years ago, I had a hardhead stick me in the soft spot between the thumb and pointer finger with his top barb. It stuck in the entire length of the barb. It wouldn't come out and was just hanging there. I had no idea how hard it would be to pull that SOB out.

My hand almost immediately swoll up like a balloon. It was probably one of the worst pains I've ever felt.

It was a hardhead. Said at the hospital they basically just yanked it out with pliers.
