According to ESPN’s Kevin Arnovitz, one anonymous NBA coach reached out to him to try and understand why Stevens is so beloved by the media and placed in such high regard.
Jealousy is strong with this comment

Because AL horford is far from a superstar. Hayward died in the first game. Kyrie is missing in the playoffs right? Top 3 picks are such "locks" to be stars or talented? I guess philly should have been vastly better off considering their process was what? 5? Yeah he has the benefit of talent, but tell me what coach gets this far with rozier, smart, Tatum, hobbled brown, horford, Baynes, and Morris. Thats just jealousy. Cleveland had how many top picks after Lebron and couldn't do shite.
Not enough credit goes to Ainge.
The NBA is a players league, and Ainge gets players.

Well.....he is in the ECF so there's that.

Absolutely but people think it has to be one or the other, either Ainge is great at getting players or Stevens is a great coach. Both are true and it's why their future is so bright.

Quote is from the end of the regular season.
Stevens is great but it is weird how he shot to the number 1 or 2 coach in the league so quickly.
Basketball guys may not like him because he's an outsider but NBA twitter loves him because he looks like a nerd.

When I look at the Celtics rotation that is playing in the playoffs this year, I feel like they are less talented than other playoff teams such as Minnesota, Portland, Philly, and a couple of others. If the Celtics can win the series against Cleveland, Stevens deserves a lot of credit. If they lose, then it's too early to put his name in the ranks of the other great coaches.
I think one of the underrated aspects of coaching is the general demeanor of a coach when things get tough. Stevens seems like a guy that is calm and will clearly communicate the game plan without getting into all of the other BS.

Why do none of Stevens assistants get credit, yet when people talk about pop Kerr etc they always talk about how great the assistants are.
Agreed. Also consider that Ainge is operating at wizard level as a GM. That might be his biggest advantage outside of himself and the player personnel.

It’s because the media gushes over what they can’t understahd. 99% of them couldn’t draw up a basic floppy or hammer action. If you watch enough of the NBA you see most teams run the same stuff. Stevens doesn’t rely nearly as much on PnR and ISO than other coaches but he’s not some x and o wizard. His teams do seem to execute better.

Stevens is pretty brilliant in ATOs.

It is a valid point that the media will build it up like he's doing this with smoke and mirrors. Horford is a 5 time allstar, Tatum and Brown are top 3 picks, Smart was picked 6th, Morris 14th and Rozier 16th.
Charlotte has something like 8 players that were drafted in the top 12. You can't use the draft order for one team and then dismiss it for another. Look at all the bad teams in the league, they're filled with top 10 picks. There's only two rounds after all.
What is Stevens throd or fourth best at worse? This is just some guy that's gotten fired 5 or 6 times bitching because Stevens doesn't come from the usual nepotism of coaching.

Stevens is a great coach but he's far from GOAT or anything like that.
But this is the NBA, having an A level roster and a C level coach >>>>>>> a B/C level roster and the best coach in the league.
Put Alvin Gentry at HC of the warriors and he's winning multiple rings. Put Stevens at LAC and they are still bottom half of the playoffs at best.

How about this:
Stevens does his fricking job.
You send him out to roll with an undersized PG and a Top 3 pick you have to develop on the fly? He does his job. You send him out with a premiere Free Agent he loses 10 minutes into the season? He does his job. You take out his PG for the playoffs? He does his job.
Teams screw up plays out of timeouts, developing Top 3 picks, building rotations, bridging the schedule through star injuries consistently; Stevens and Company haven't-- and they do not make excuses or surrender responsibilities to players to distract from when they're doing a comparatively bad job, either.
If Ty Lue did his fricking job as frequently as Brad Stevens has his, in his short tenure, we'd be calling him the Black Phil Jackson. Instead, Cavs fans have to suffer through being held hostage by LeBron.
Don't want people to give Brad Stevens attention for holding players accountable, working hard, and doing the every day tasks that build winning?
Then do it your damned self, NBA coaches.

they are just mad cause he didn't have to be an assistant for 10 years in the nba before he got a head job. he didn't have to go through "the grind." and he's a college coach. he's young.
they are jealous

Not at all, happens all the time - media is the mouthpiece for anonymous coaches/gms/players.

Dude how can you not look at the job Stephens is doing and be impressed? He’s up 3-2 without a single superstar on his team. I haven’t seen anyone say they would take Stephens over every player in the league when starting a team. How many alters do you have now btw to upvote your shitposts that make up fake commentary?
Onto OP, that coach sounds like a jackass. No one was even close to saying Horford is definitely the best two way playmaking big man in the league before the season. Everyone was using him as trade bait for another big name before Irving got hurt.
Stephens loses Irving though and somehow gets this team within 1 win of the Finals with a rookie, a 2nd year wing who was supposed to take a few years to develop, Terry Rozier, a Morris twin, Horford, Baynes, and now Marcus Smart.

Some discussion on drive-time Sirius radio suggests that this is a common sentiment among the coaching ranks. Supposedly many don't like him because he didn't have to "pay his dues" or come up the right way.
So he's not a re-tread multiple time failure like let's say....Alvin Gentry, who keeps getting jobs over and over despite mediocrity. Got it.
Boston tried something new and it's working and the boys don't like it.

Where did we say we weren’t impressed?
We said he is not far and away the best coach and that when you got people taking him over any player it is a clear sign that this has gotten out of hand.
