Stevens is a hell of a coach, but the draft picks, players gotten through trades and FA have helped exponentially.

It’s not like he is winning with a bunch of nobody players.

NBA has always been about the players not the coach.

This isn't football.

Magic won an NBA title with Paul Westhead and then asked management to fire him because he thought Westhead was inhibiting him...Lakers fired him after winning a championship...and the Lakers kept on winning without him.

Bird won two NBA titles with KC Jones at the helm.

This was always understood.

Only today's fan is putting coaches on a pedastal.

But I think many objectively would say that coaching a Horizon League school to two straight national title games is dues-paying these other NBA coaches would not want to try to pull off.

I think the gatekeepers of NBA coaching think you should have to be an assistant for many years then get your shot. It's just the culture I guess.

Casual as can be. he had a coach get hired into a HC job in Borrego, another first runner up in Milwaukee, and another who has had several HC interviews. And that’s not even including Hammond.

+Budenholzer who was his main assistant for years

NBA coaching circles are the tugboat captains of the professional sports world.

Stevens represents an ideological threat and it probably has these guys concerned.

but last year you could argue he got outcoached by Fred Hoiberg, coached by (Scott Brooks to a draw, and then the LeBron freight train or whatever.

So last year is brought up for this year?

Agreed. I love Stevens and he’s a Top 5 coach in the league.

But it’s not like he’s having to start a bunch of scrubs out there either. Still, making the ECF without Hayward and Kyrie is very impressive

He isn't starting a bunch of scrubs, but he also isn't starting LeBron, KD, or Harden a real superstar. What he is doing is impressive when they lose their two best players during the season. Yea the players playing are not bad but he gets the most out of them.

Are you implying that KC Jones was a shitty coach?

Or ... that it really would not have mattered who the Celtics had as HC with that roster?

Damn straight. Boston should have hired Byron Scott instead.

It isn't like he's doing this with undrafted FA's. Even without Irving and Hayward, the Celts have some talented guys.

I agree, but taking "some talented guys" to the conference finals (and being up 2-0 against Lebron) is a pretty fricking huge accomplishment, especially considering Irving and Hayward are out.

A lot of this also has to do with them losing their 2nd best player (arguably) and still doing well, then losing their best, and STILL doing this well/going this far. At some point, it has to be coaching.

Is he the greatest coach ever? Who knows...likely not, but time can tell all of that. And obviously the Celtics front office deserves credit as well. But I don't understand why it's such an awful thing to recognize that he's done a pretty damn amazing job with the things that have happened to his team this year. Far better than almost anyone would have bet on after the first week of the season, and even up until a few months ago.

It’s the height of groupthink to say that Stevens is far and away the best coach.

It really isn't. Ironically, groupthink is exactly why he is far and away the best coach. At the absolute highest level, 29 out of 30 coaches fall for an egregious fallacy of sitting a player with foul trouble. There is absolutely no rational behind it except for it is done by other coaches. If they are that irrational, what makes you think their strategy is any less irrational?

No different than religiously punting on 4th down, just because it was done before the invention of the forward pass. Groupthink allows somebody who resists it to be rational in a sea of irrationality, and thus to have

Some discussion on drive-time Sirius radio suggests that this is a common sentiment among the coaching ranks. Supposedly many don't like him because he didn't have to "pay his dues" or come up the right way.

Sounds like a bunch of jealousy to me.

It's ok because he will start owning all there arses next year.

It is group think. Bc peolple who have no idea about any of the details of his job have come to the conclusion that he is the best bc they have heard others say the same. While those in the business say pump the breaks there are other coaches who are doing it at that level without the praise.

And no 29 of 30 coaches don’t sit players in foul trouble. Brad is not unique. This is the kinda fib that was made up and bought into by those like you who subscribe to the group think.

Who else does? Van Gundy of course. He doesn't coach anymore.

I don’t know of. any coaches who always sit players in ‘foul trouble’. first define foul trouble. Then show me that certain coaches sub guys out more than Stevens. Anything else is just a made up narrative. the kind that leads to group think. Stevens ain’t unique in how he handles foul trouble ..... I’ll believe it when I see data.
