According to ESPN’s Kevin Arnovitz, one anonymous NBA coach reached out to him to try and understand why Stevens is so beloved by the media and placed in such high regard.

But he’s like, we all respect Brad, but — and this was about Coach of the Year — and he was like, look, he’s done nicely, but last year you could argue he got outcoached by Fred Hoiberg, coached by (Scott Brooks to a draw, and then the LeBron freight train or whatever.

“Yes, he started, they had to rebuild that process and he built a culture, and yes, it’s been nice. But OK, each year they add — Oh, hey, here’s the best playmaking two-way big man in the league in Al Horford. Oh, here’s a steady stream of top-three picks. Oh, guess what we have for you this year? Hayward went down? It’s OK, because you have the best shot-making point guard in the league. …

Sounds pretty salty especially since no coach gave him a COY vote.

Some discussion on drive-time Sirius radio suggests that this is a common sentiment among the coaching ranks. Supposedly many don't like him because he didn't have to "pay his dues" or come up the right way.
Sounds like a bunch of jealousy to me.

Very weird that a coach would reach out to a media member about this, right?

It’s the height of groupthink to say that Stevens is far and away the best coach. Some saying they would take him over any player in the league is udderly laughable. As for the voting, each coach voted for first place only. So him not getting any votes is really NBD.

Why do none of Stevens assistants get credit, yet when people talk about pop Kerr etc they always talk about how great the assistants are.

I mean we can pump the brakes on GOAT or genius, but he's still pretty good. Time will tell.
I think we can all agree he wouldn't have Orlando back to contenders by now. So the Boston thing helps.

Casual fan.
Adams is known as the best D coordinator in the league and people rave about Pops assistants all the time.

Stevens is a good coach and has done a good job.
It is a valid point that the media will build it up like he's doing this with smoke and mirrors. Horford is a 5 time allstar, Tatum and Brown are top 3 picks, Smart was picked 6th, Morris 14th and Rozier 16th.
It isn't like he's doing this with undrafted FA's. Even without Irving and Hayward, the Celts have some talented guys.
Again, he's still a good coach, just that the hype undersells the talent he still has.

Lakers hired one. Hornets hired one.
And Spurs assistants names come up like every year during coaching searches.

That doesn’t make it incorrect. When Haralabob Voulgaris says it, I tend to listen.

Well that is dumb. Nobody respectable is saying that.

If Jason fricking Kidd, Mark Jackson, Tyronn Lue, Doc Rivers, and even Steve Kerr don't get the same backlash within the coaching community, they are the biggest hypocrites alive. Stevens spent 6 years at a mid major and did so well, that no one batted an eye when Ainge hired him to take over one of the most decorated franchises in American sports.
Pop and D'Antoni are certainly different and have proven themselves

Casual as can be. he had a coach get hired into a HC job in Borrego, another first runner up in Milwaukee, and another who has had several HC interviews. And that’s not even including Hammond.

I mean, I hear players rave about him, and not just his own. That's as good an endorsement as you can have.
Of course the coaches going up against him are going to resent him. Some have been in the league exponentially longer and haven't gotten the praise he's gotten.

He’s a smart guy but gets overly emo someitmes. When he loses or is losing money on a game, it means that teams coach sucks. Or the refs.

Because AL horford is far from a superstar.
Hayward died in the first game.
Kyrie is missing in the playoffs right?
Top 3 picks are such "locks" to be stars or talented? I guess philly should have been vastly better off considering their process was what? 5?
Yeah he has the benefit of talent, but tell me what coach gets this far with rozier, smart, Tatum, hobbled brown, horford, Baynes, and Morris.
Thats just jealousy. Cleveland had how many top picks after Lebron and couldn't do shite.

Bingo.
But I think many objectively would say that coaching a Horizon League school to two straight national title games is dues-paying these other NBA coaches would not want to try to pull off.
