Emory Ellis, a black homeless man in Boston, was hungry so he went to Burger King one morning in 2015

Ellis was arrested in November 2015 and charged with forgery of a bank note.

He wasn't released from jail until February 2016

The lawsuit comes weeks after the arrest of two black men at a Philadelphia Starbucks and other cases that have shined a spotlight on minorities' interactions with law enforcement.

What the hell are the statute of limitations on this? Why did it take over 2 years after he was released to finally file a lawsuit?

quote:

Ellis, 37, never got his money back, the lawsuit says.

That's messed up. It was determined his money was real, he never got his breakfast, served 3 months on a wrongful conviction, and they kept his $10.

Burger King didn’t hold him in jail so why should they be liable for the jail/ police department mess up.

Burger King made the fake bill claim, not the police he was enforcing the law once he was called.

Again, the dumb duck obviously didnt know and a stop at the nearest bank would have cleared this up.

The guy will sue BK and the police...and rightfully so

Are counterfeit operations common among the homeless? I assume you'd have to have some pretty sophisticated equipment to pull that off. It's not like they have printing presses underneath the overpass.

So, just for entertainment, now somebody should make up a few fake 10's and hand them out to homeless guys in Boston.

Boston PD is inexcusably stupid

Name one PD that isn't. These idiot cops come out of high school having retained nothing and join the police force because they have no other future. And on top of that receive 2 weeks training and are dropped onto the streets to menace civilians.

I don’t see the problem with him spending 3 months in jail. I’m sure he’s guilty of something

Just because your ol lady has banged a lot of homeless black guys, doesn't mean they deserve to be in jail.

How in the holy mother of frick does this happen?

Fire the cops. Better yet, put their asses in jail for three months if they can’t even do their due diligence in ensuring that a ten dollar bill is fake or not and put an innocent dude in prison for it.

Compared to most they are actually pretty good. Compared to NOPD and BRPD they are the Secret Service.

That’s absolute bullcrap.

I support the police but again, this is why they are their own worst enemy.

They arrest a man for using a REAL $10 bill and cause him to sit in jail for 3 months for doing nothing wrong.

The life of a man with a job supporting a family is only worth like 5 million I thought. Hard to imagine 3 months of this guys life is valued at 950k. It’s harsh but I thought that’s more or less how this worked.

The violation of parole was that he was arrested for the "fake money". So he didn't actually violate his parole.

That being said, I bet there's more to this story. He may have been perfectly happy sitting in jail during the winter and getting three meals a day. I wouldn't be surprised to find out that his lawyer came to him telling him to sue.

My problem is this, are we really that inefficient where the officer cant stop at a bank in the way to the jail and ask for their professional opinion?
