I literally spent 1 hour recently teaching a late 60's y/o nurse (new hire) how to assign herself 3 patients (normally, a 2 minute effort) on the computer so she can document what treatments/meds she administers. Assigning a patient involves searching for a patient's name in the patient database, assigning a RN code, then clicking a nurses name from a nursing database. Simple.

(Louisiana/NOLA hospitals have mandated computer charting since 2012 so I assumed she had some basic pc competence.)

I realized quickly how simple I had to break things down when I had to explain what a mouse/cursor were and what windows were, how to close/minimize windows, etc...

I guided her through the first two assignments which took 45 minutes, with slow, simple detailed repetitive instructions, step-by-step. She said "They said you were good at teaching, and that I should orient with you! You make it seem really simple". Plus she wrote down every step I mentioned!

Ok she seemed to get it, so I told her I was going to watch her assign herself the 3rd patient unprompted. If I did not stop her before she hit enter, she would have assigned her 3rd patient to a doctor in Baton Rouge at a sister facility!!! I mean it's one thing if she didn't realize she wasn't in the nurses database, as she was actually in the MD database, but why the frick would she randomly select a name that is not HER name??? The first thing she should have said was "Ok I'm lost. I don't see my name. Help!" Instead, she just clicked a random name, not close to hers, and was about to apply the selection by hitting enter. It makes no fricking sense.

I lost my patience assigning patients.

Thanks Obama!!!

The doctor I have used for most of my life and is an excellent doctor retired because of all the stupid computer shite doctors must do now that wastes time out of their day when they could be seeing patients that is a requirement of the ACA.

The nice thing about threads like this from youngsters is that it is guaranteed that at some point in their lives, if they are lucky, they will be old, too. In my generation, the worst driver in the world was an old man wearing a hat.Today, it is any youngster driving with a phone in his/her hand. Who was/is more of a threat to society today?

I’m so tired of watching old people at work move in slow motion to put together an elementary spreadsheet in Excel.

I'm 58 and, without computer knowledge, I would not be able to perform my job. The first computer I had the luxury of working on back in the 80s was the Zenith Z-100 when I first enlisted in the Air Force. Over the years, I've become proficient in Excel, Word, Access, Publisher, Power Point, Adobe Acrobat Pro DC, Info Path Designer as well as several others. So, I guess not all old people move in slow motion and suck at computers.

Computers yes.

OP shows clearly that the former is false. Even asking the question shows complete lack of comprehension and thinking ability.

I might be old by some standards on here, 55, but could run circles around your young asses on a computer, JACK! I've been working with computers since 1981, and before you say "pc's weren't around then", think big mainframes, dumbasses. And I was one of the pioneers with hooking the pc world into the mainframe, a pioneer in the world of networks. If it weren't for "old folks" like me you wouldn't be able to porn surf, JACK!

Heck, I've been on them since you were just a twinkle in your mother's young adolescent eye.

Microsoft excel has been around since 1987. That means that someone at retirement age (65) was only 34 at the time. If you’re 50 today, you were a teenager when it came out.

Well logically... In home computers, that you could actually surf the web (not just DOS games and b/s), didn't become that popular until the latter half of the 90's or so. It is not uncommon for older people to not understand electronics fully, they spent more than half of their lives without needing an electronic at all.

I can work a computer, if something happened I can figure out on my own how to fix it. When I went to school if we turned in a paper, that was typed and printed out, it was considered a form of plagiarism, and I'm 30. So for older people to not understand somethings about computers or its software, are not realistic.

"old people" who "suck" at computers don't necessarily bother me. My dad drives a machine for a logging company and my mother was a self employed business owner.

Neither of them needed to operate a computer in their day-to-day work. They're becoming more and more savy with their smartphones though.

I get annoyed by people (not just the old) who literally sit in front of a computer 8 hours a day yet can't do basic tasks like open a web browser or click on the start menu nor do they understand simple concepts like downloading files or copy/paste.

I have no idea why being proficient with basic computer operations isn't a required skill in jobs like that. I figure these people are wizards in other aspects of their job but interacting with a lot of them on a daily basis I'm partial to say that many are just lazy overpaid fricktards.
