You can't call it menial work if you don't even know how to do it

There's actually a metric shite ton of 50+ ladies who have sat at a desk chair their entire lives, but can't manage to compose an e-mail that contains attachments.

I'm old and I'm pretty good with them.

Although I will say I don't like the change they made to macros a few years back.

When any new technology arrives, most people react by just not using it very well. They try to do things the way they've always done but using the new tool ... to do exactly the same thing and in the same way.

They generally do not use the new technology in any way that is new to them. Mostly they just complain about it. I've seen people who always drew flowcharts by hand start to use Visio. If they needed to move an object on the chart they erased it and redrew it from scratch in the new location. After all, that's how they did it on paper! The concept of selecting an object and dragging it never occurred to them until it was pointed out ... and usually was rejected anyway.

I do large enterprise software implementation and see this all the time. We roll out something new and there's generally a fair amount of resistance. We hear lots of gripes about how is sure was better the old way, etc. etc. Then over the next 2-3 years a new batch of users get hired and they take to the new stuff easily. They never knew the old way and before long they are more productive than the older employees.

It isn't that old people suck, it's that people generally don't adapt to new tech well. It requires more work that changes the way they've "always done it". It's just that by the time they're 60 it's hugely obvious, at 35 less so because not as much has changed.

Moral: If you want to work past 55 you'd better adapt.

I gotta say I hate excel. With a passion. I'll do something the hard way just to avoid having to set up cells.

They don't suck because they don't get it; it's because they simply don't care.

You really have to keep up with the technology of business systems. I found myself getting behind just because my skills were getting stale. I mean I am reasonably proficient but felt like I needed to get better so took a bunch of classes on my own time and expense.
