I wonder how many of the active Team 6 guys are still holding to those standards? I know that this team is pretty much cherry picked from the rest of the teams and as you said, the new guys can probably crush these numbers but I imagine that after multiple deployments and off the grid engagements that the more seasoned Team 6 guys probably crush more Advils than weights.

I would almost certainly think you are correct. The work that they're doing isn't conducive at all to maintaining that standard long-term. I am sure they are still in good enough shape to do the job, but maintaining that level of fitness is probably not possible after a few years of their training and deployment schedule.

The guys on the other Teams were in great shape in my experience, but their deployments were shorter and more regular, and they were almost always based out of larger bases overseas with good facilities. Not necessarily the case with DEVGRU guys.

The guys on SF teams were a little like that as well. They were all still in really good shape, but they weren't physical wunderkinds like they all were coming out of the Q. Being embedded with local forces 200+ days a year takes its toll on your body.

With a collection of guys that are the the Alphas out of an already pretty damn hard group of individuals, I am sure the desire to stay on top of their game is intense just for bragging purposes alone. However, these guys are all probably in their 30's and the more senior guys, probably 40's. I figure with just the jumps alone that they are all kinda beat-up. In fact, the guy that popped Bin Laden in his book said that that Team 6 guys look more like washed up surf-boarders than superheros.

Same with our force guys. You can’t hold that level of fitness well into your late 30s and early 40s which are the ages of some of those Gunnys and Master sergeants still pumping out deployments. Those enlisted guys want to hook and jab forever, even beyond their capabilities.

I remember we did a range with some prior SF guys. Mostly retired contractors but we were all amazed at just how good these guys were at their craft. We didn’t know what to expect when they rolled up; bunch of old white guys with pot-bellies but they could straight up end some fricking lives if they wanted to.

Just my experience, but most of the guys on those units looked more like top-tier swimmers, soccer players, and decathletes (think Ashton Eaton) rather than bulked up NFL linebackers.

Have you worked with any Raiders? Good friend of mine is a retired Raider that got out as a Major. He is not the most imposing guy, but knowing his background, would not frick with.

Honestly, you hardly ever hear about these guys, even among Marines for some reason. I guess that's the way they like it.

When I was getting out, I went through out-processing at Lewis with one of my good buddies, and there was a CW3 from 1st Group out-processing with us. He had white - not graying, gray, or salt-and-pepper, but white - long hair (for the military) and a white mustache. He had to be at least in his mid- to late-40's. He had a stack of chest candy on his ACU's including the then-rare and now almost extinct CIB with a star. No telling what that guy did in his career. My buddy and I took to calling him "Killer", obviously not to his face.

i'm a pretty good (but not great, there are a lot faster on this board) runner and can get that under the right circumstances, but i focus on running and not lifting.

that's a pretty tough time to get if you don't do a lot of running. i could get the bench easy and mayyyyyybe the pullups.

Your friend probably started out in FR if he made it to retirement. The Raiders were stood up out of Force Recon battalion when the USMC was mandated to contribute to USSOCOM per the 9/11 DHS laws.

The Marines basically just dumped all their force recon guys and said “ok, go adopt a new mission and be awesome at it now” and they did. They then rebuilt their Recon numbers through the years. Worked with? Yes.

He was actually Infantry. Did a couple of deployments and then became an OSO. After that gig, he tried out for the Raiders. Was getting close to promotion to O5 but pulled the plug since his marriage was about to implode (go figure). I have asked him about the selection into the Raiders as I was curious about what MOS's they pulled from mostly since I figured it would be a direct pipeline of the hardest Recon Marines right into the Raiders but that's not always the case. He said they get lots of different guys.

SF is the same. Infantry is the bulk, especially for officers, but they'll take in adjutants, intel, comms, engineers, you name it. There was (might still be) a critical shortage of medical sergeants (18D's) all throughout SF, and they really, really want guys with those skills if you can bring them.

Grew up with a guy who went through the Q course at 42. He can run all night and all day, but he looks like a grampa.

Just wanted to bump this up. Been reading back through greyskull stuff especially the challenges and I am going to start implementing many of the challenges into my training as performance goals.

Anybody attempt this yet?

I can do the bench and run right now. I am nowhere near the 10-15 chins with 40lbs though. Currently on week 9 GSLP strength/hypertrophy template.

Pull-ups? Check, but 10 with 40lbs extra would be tough.
Bench at BW? 190 for 30 reps.
5 mile run? Nah. I hate running.

I’m getting into better running shape, and my pullup capability is much higher. Not sure about 40 lb pullups though. I am trying to focus a lot on conditioning as well.

In reference to previous posts: I met and worked out with some SEALs one time. Very nice guys. They were not intimidating to look at at all. Obviously, they were in great shape. Not really bulky, but pretty shredded. They must have banged out a thousand pullups and pushups in between sets. They were not freakishly strong, but just their body language was different. Not quite sure how to put it in words, but they were a bit of a different breed.

Yes - I started at 4:30 this morning.

I stopped at 4:32 when I realized it was raining outside.
