Learning to manage the course is important too...looking at the green, the first thought in my mind is where is the miss. Where do I want to end up if/when I miss this green? Because more times than not, you will.

yup, I've never thought around the course in this fashion but it is overall a game of misses.

It’s not about how good your good shots are. It’s about how bad your bad shots are. Manage your misses

And make some putts

don't count your strokes mentally or add them up on the scorecard until the round is over. You'll know you're playing well anyway and it only puts more pressure on you.

Yep. I tried to do this when I knew I was closing in on my best round ever, but was informed walking to 18 green what I was at by a playing partner. It was not great for the nerves. Proceeded to 3 putt and tie my best score instead of breaking it.

greens in regulation

I have only done it once and it was the day that every approach was on the green. 78 at LaCantera. Luckily, my putting didn't let me down.

for me it was all mental, I'd do stupid shite when I had a chance to go low bc I was nervous. The first time I broke 80 I ended up shooting 76, I made an unexpected eagle late on the back nine and it kind of freed me up to know that I had room to play with and bogies wouldn't kill me. Since then it's not the same type of mental hurdle

worked on my short game and focused on hitting the middle of the green instead of trying to shoot at the pin. Also taking smarter shots instead of hoping for the best on low percentage shots.

Worked on short game the most. If you can limit three putts and give your self a shot at going up and down with most of your chips, you will cut a ton of strokes off your scores.

And honestly just playing a lot. I can only very rarely break 80 now because I just don't have the time I did when I was younger. The nerves never really bothered me. Although I did hit a wall. I have never shot par on 18 but have on 9. I have shot 2-3 over par plenty of times but always had a WTF hole or two every round.

ive hit 80 on the number probably 10 times and have yet to break it.

has to be mostly short game and mental toughness.

when I have a good round going it's hard to calm the nerves in the end because you are thinking about the great round you have going.

what did you do to finally break 80?

From what I remember, it started happening a lot when I became confident about two things:
- barring a quite tough lie or shot, I could get up and down from just about anywhere
- I could keep it in play with a driver off the tee almost every single time

Everything else fell into place pretty quickly after that. I was playing and practicing a lot (and hitting a growth spurt), but those two things were critical.

It gets much tougher as you get closer to scratch as the marginal benefits of your practice time diminish, but getting to scratch for me took a lot of effort in three areas:
- controlling wedge distances and wedge game from 50 to 140 in general
- becoming even more consistent with your driver and fairway woods
- learning to shape shots

Key to breaking 80 is avoiding the big number. Key to getting to scratch is getting the precision to make enough birdies to offset the bad swings.

I played a pretty shitty course in the Dallas area. Drove 3 par 4 greens with an eagle and 3 birdies on the day. Shot a 78.

I’ve never broken 85 other than that, so I don’t count it unless I do.

The few times I've done it, most of my game was on, but the key parts were keeping the drives relatively straight (ie in play) and putting, the latter being the most noticeable improvement from the norm.

First time I broke 80 I had a great day tee to green.

A good short game will keep you breaking 80.

You need to hit more greens in regulation. That’s the easiest way

my frustration is a little lower

i've probably shot between 73-76 over thirty times in my life, but i've never shot a round of even par

i once went to 18 at -1 and doubled it

i have plenty of rounds in the 80's, but i know i'm capable of shooting a 70 or 71....but you just can't make very many mistakes at all if you want to shoot that low

Like everyone has said, you can pick up a lot of strokes on the green. For whatever reason the last time I was playing a bunch, I found the touch. I could always see the lines, but knowing the exact speed to make it fall is tougher. I always tried to die it in. If I missed, I had a gimme. Two putt pars will take you a long way

He quoted greens in regulation and said when he did it, every approach was in the green. Definitely read like 18/18 GIR.
