Can't beat 80s Nostalgia....
With numbers Like that there's a Good shot there will be a sequel.
I guarantee this film will have a little Jumanji in it too... It will have staying power. I already want to see it again and it feels like others do too. Word will spread, plus you have to go back to catch all the easter eggs.

Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One, with what amounts to 85% of its international footprint stomping across the globe, has grossed $128M in 62 territories. Warner Bros. enjoyed its biggest weekend ever in China where it opened to $61.7M on its 18,200 screens. That one territory — where it has enjoyed a high Douban score of 9.2 — accounted for more than half of its screens as the virtual reality themed-film based on the Ernest Cline book played on 35,600 screens this weekend overseas. The global tally for the weekend is a big $181.3M. It also was the No. 1 film in North America.

I don't keep up w/this crap much -- is this the first time a movie has had a bigger debut in China?
could be one of those turning points in history

No.
Warcraft almost made more it's opening day in China w/$46m of an eventual $221m run than it did it's entire domestic run of just $46.7m.

God, I hope not.
There's no second book, so I hope they don't just make shite up for money.

IMO they stripped most the 80s nostalgia out of the story. Biggest change in an adaptation that I can recall.

Chinese take decimated the US domestic for Pacific Rim a few weeks ago.
Overall US accounted for less than 20% of the overall take.
Yes, I think we are definitely seeing a shifting trend away from US target demographics in marketing and scriptwriting.

Cline's already written the first draft for Ready Player Two, he said he wanted to have that done before the movie was made so he wouldn't be overly influenced by it. He wanted to make sure the second book was a sequel to the first book and not a sequel to the movie.

There is a second book in the works. Announced after RP1 was picked up for a movie

The movie was somewhere between Jurassic Park and The Lost World in adaption. He'll be fine.

If Cline is writing a RP2 and they make that, cool. I do not want to see them make Armada into a movie. It was crap.

Armada was one of the most disappointing follow-ups I’ve ever read. The dialogue and story were cringe-worthy. Hopefully he takes his time with the next one instead of forcing one out for his publishers.

Well they pretty much made up the 1st one. 95% of the movie was nothing like the book.

That's kind of an outlier though. Asian people cream themselves over giant robot and giant monster movies. Pacific Rim 2 was pretty much green lighted because of China expectations.

Agreed.
It was clearly a case where his publisher said "quick, crank something out while you're hot!".
So he grabbed all the unused 80's references he had left over from RP1 and wrote a story around them.
When I read it I thought of having to write term papers with quoted sources. I'd go to the library and get a bunch of quotes on the subject I wanted to write about, then write the paper around those quotes.

That must have been a big day for Cline, then. The movie rights were settled the same day he settled on a publication deal for "Ready Player One." And to think the sequel was already secured that day too.
So...they knew the movie was "going to happen" a full year before the book was actually in print.
