They need to go partner with Audubon in New Orleans and let them take it over.
I bet they could make an attraction that would be on par with what's in New Orleans and it might do much better.
I've had an Audubon membership for years when my kids were little and we went to zoo, aquarium and insectarium several times and the membership paid for itself.
If done right, lots would go to where it is located now. Hell, maybe even add a small aquarium on the property somewhere to attract more visitors.

Close it. Save the money. I'd rather drive a little further and see a good zoo.

They're incompetent. They've been allowing the current zoo to deteriorate and for many animals to die for lack of care in order to create impetus to move the zoo. This is political gamesmanship pure and simple.

The zoo currently is a drain on the taxpayers.

The Audubon Institute has shown over and over that they really know how to run zoos properly and care for their animals appropriately. I think BREC should explore selling the zoo property to Audubon or contracting out management of the zoo to them while retaining ownership of the property.

The zoo is a waste of resources and I cannot believe we are all wasting this much energy and time discussing it.

I went to the zoo for their Halloween event with my two year old. The displays suck, the habitat is horrible and the grounds are not well kept. Half of the displays had no animals. Some were either too larger to see anything or too small for the animal. No body is using the damn zoo.

It needs to go.

I think we should close it down and give the money to projects solely in North Baton Rouge.

Damnit, Gravy beat me to that idea. Is that not how it works?

Why does not Gravy and his ilk realize that the animals are not free. They are held in cages. Every animal and human should be free.

You really think Audobon would buy it given its current and now locked in location?

Rule #1 when selecting a location for your business is to place it in the middle of your target demographic.

The current location is at least 45 minutes to an hour away from the highest concentration of people who would actully use the zoo.

I can drive 1hr 15mins to the Audobon Zoo in Nola. Which one you think I'm going to choose?

I think we should close it. It's not worth sinking 100+ million in its current location

Just get rid of the zoo completely and give the animals to other zoos or privatize the zoo. No need for taxes to pay for that shite.

Yep, if they aren't going to move it, then shut it down.
