And herein lies the problem. If it were in a better location and properly run, it would be a money maker. Where it is now, it's as good as it's going to get.

I saw a comment from someone on the advocate after the vote yesterday say why can't we have a better entrance, over night camps, water park, etc. Who, in their right mind, would send their kid to an overnight camp in NBR.

Additionally, the majority of the staff they have there now are of the entitled group rendering them nearly useless. Moving it closer to LSU allows for students, especially vet school students, to work there putting them on par with what Audubon zoo does.

Lastly, Santa whatever that is opposed to having the zoo near them. I guess NIMBY is alive and well.

When it got started in 1970 the location was still pretty decent. Downtown was still thriving, nice people still lived north of Florida Blvd, etc. etc. Unfortunately all that changed and now anything in that location is just not where most people want to go.

Fun fact: Buckskin Bill used to end his show in the 60's by saying BR needed a zoo. He popularized it to the point that BR got a zoo. It just got one about 20 years to late to be worthwhile.

I'm all for moving the zoo... as long as BREC can do it within their current budget and without a tax increase.

frick no to paying more taxes for it though.

NBR wins again. Blacks come out to the meeting saying moving the zoo is racist. Gravy even said that the zoo “belongs” to the black people of NBR, despite the fact that they don’t support it or help fund its operations. BREC folded like a house of cards. When in doubt, play that race card for all it's worth. In BR’s current political climate, it works every time.

Shut it down. Really no reason to have a zoo when there is a much nicer one so close by in New Orleans

Thats the worst part about this. Him and his people didnt care about the zoo for the last 15 years. Now all of a sudden its some huge thing to fight over and scream racism about.

And that fat piece of shite shows up to a board meeting looking like he just mowed his parent lawn. Shorts, tshirt, and backwards cap and this guy has a direct path to our local politicians ears

i hate to say it because they have some very good people at the zoo working with the animals, but i hope the zoo fails miserably

The leaked conversations from the BREC board hit this right on the head. The zoo is dying as it is and the only thing that could save it was a move.

NBR may get to keep the zoo but not for long as the admission numbers go down and hesitance to invest big money in a renovation goes up.

While I really don’t care if they close it at its present location, this a horrible argument against the zoo. Nola also has the saints. Should lsu not play football. Nola has movie theaters and restaurants, should we drive there for those as well. Yes the Audubon zoo is better than the br zoo. But moving it to be within a 20 minute drive vs a 45-60 minute drive for around 200,000 people wasn’t a bad idea.

The zoo in south ebr could have been a tax revenue machine.

BREC was not successful the first time tax payers put them in charge of the Zoo, but if we give them 100's of millions more they will get it right this time. Promise!

That is not necessarily true. Central and Zachary are 10-15 minutes from this location and Denham Springs [going the back way through Central] can be 20-25 minutes away. Unless you're just on the complete opposite side of BR this is not a 45 minute drive. LSU area is only 20-25 minutes away tops.

The zoo is used a lot by people in the Central and Zachary areas. BREC just has let it go to crap because I really believe they just wanted a excuse to move it.

I love how everyone thinks moving the zoo was a slam dunk business decision. You all think these same people who voted No would be smart enough to run it successfully if only they voted Yes.

I haven't been to the BREC zoo in about 3 years. I had a friend that was a keeper there and we used to visit on weekends. Had a pass and everything.

No it was not Audubon, but that is a top-level zoo. I always thought the one in BR was perfectly fine for a mid-level city.

Maybe the zoo should be spun out into it's own entity. Houston Zoo was a hellhole when it was run by the city of Houston. They created a nonprofit public-private partnership to run it and it took off. Heck, Audubon is essentially a non-profit that runs the zoo for the Audubon Commission which is a city agency.

Nah. Zoo is a pretty big amenity.

They should build a better and nicer one. Preferably closer to the center of EBR parish.

Both true. A zoo in Baker is a decent spot for Zachary and Central. It's a bad spot for south Baton Rouge and the bulk of the suburban population.

Seems like the goal is to sell the most tickets and obtain more sponsors. To accomplish both of those goals, they need a better spot and a better zoo.

Not my ideal location, but a zoo at the old fairgrounds would be closer to the region's center of population and more of their target market. They'll get more visitors and can justify a nicer zoo.

Would still rather it closer to the middle of town, but I don't know where else they could possibly put it.

You don't have to hope too hard, because it already has failed miserably.

Anybody who grew up in the Baton Rouge area in the 70's and 80's can vouche for that. There are some people who never experienced the zoo when it was at full capacity and nice. There was a time when the Baton Rouge Zoo actually gave Audubon Zoo a run for their money, in comparison.

The last time I went to the zoo (~3 years ago) it was so depressing that I refuse to go back. There was a tiger, a monkey, a few birds, and a bunch of empty exhibits overgrown with weeds. It was a pathetic excuse for a zoo. Nothing like it was when I grew up going to it. Regardless of where it is located, I say close the mf down.
