A self-driving car from Uber Technologies Inc. hit and killed a woman in Tempe, Arizona, on Sunday evening, what is likely the first pedestrian fatality involving a driverless vehicle.

The woman was crossing the road when the Uber vehicle, operating in autonomous mode, struck her, according to the Tempe Police Department. She was transferred to a local hospital where she died from her injuries. "Uber is assisting and this is still an active investigation," Liliana Duran, a spokeswoman from the Tempe police, said in an emailed statement.

Any more details in the link?

Like... was she in a crosswalk with the right of way, or did she step out from in between two parked cars?

This is why we can’t advance. Uber can’t even invent a car that is safe as a NYC taxi driver. They never hit anything.

Maybe the car did make a moral decision and that's why it ran her over?

I know it doesn't really matter, but I wonder if the pedestrian was in the crosswalk.

True. But who cares it is ultimately safer than a human.

Sure, it will suck when he hear a story of how it plows through a human instead of simply swerving and hitting a duck or whatever, but if it ultimately prevents more crashes/injury/death, I am all for it

This just looks like a failure, as a safe alternative seemed available.

But you are right. Eventually, the system will have to decide who lives/dies in a particular traffic situation. Do they opt for self/driver preservation at all costs?

To her, not much of one.

To the concept/industry, a huge difference.

when you're driving do you often punish people who fail to use the crosswalk by killing them?

What?

Do you have more details than the OP's link? Without it, you can't possibly have a "told you so" moment or know if this was due to the car not making a moral decision.
