it’s not even a counter point. Leicester did it over the course of a whole season, and did it with match days to spare. if this game is played 9 more times, I doubt UVA wins all 9

Virginia set a new record for most wins in ACC history this year right? I don't think it's fair to make this an indictment on their style of ball.
So that's an indictment of the ACC. They all lost big time to this motley crue?

This is what happens when you don't scrape the shite right off your shoes.

Stanford over USC in 2007.
USC was a 41 point favorite. Stanford was 1-3, USC 4-0. Stanford was starting their backup QB.

This was easily the greatest upset in NCAA basketball history. Possibly greatest upset in the history of sports.

1. App state over Michigan
2. UMBC over Virginia
3. Ruben Studdard over Clay Aiken
4. USA over USSR

My cousin went to UMBC, so I feel personally responsible for this win, I was a huge contributing factor

Before yesterday, how many UMBC students
A. Knew they were in the NCAA tournament?
B. Knew who they were playing?
C. Knew their school's mascot?
D. Knew they had a basketball team?
I bet it was a higher percentage than you think.
They do now, and they should feel proud.

quote:College sports cannot have the greatest upset of all time as they are amateurs and have not been playing their sport for as long as professionals. Douglass over Tyson was much bigger. USA over USSR was even bigger. You had actual amateurs beating professionals.
I had never heard of UMBC before tonight. It is the biggest upset all of time

At least UVA lost to another college team. The Miracle on Ice was the best professional players IN THE WORLD against a bunch of college kids (and not even our best college aged hockey players). Russia's goalie was considered the greatest ever at the time.
What the US team did in 1980 would be the equivalent of UVA losing to a regional high school all-star team from North Dakota.

this. Miracle on Ice and it's not even close.
UMBC being called "the greatest upset in sports history" is a joke. It was a spectacular upset, sure, but the disparity between 1 and 16 seeds is more narrow than ever. UVA plays a static brand of basketball that crumbles in the tournament every year and has one potential NBA player on their roster - and he was injured for this game. It's still impressive what Bennett gets out of those guys, but this wasn't some historically great UVA team despite the record. No one is confusing them for 1990 UNLV.

Nah, didn't VA lose it's best player right before this game? Let's not go overboard now.

Yes they did... But whatever... Not sure how much that would have mattered.....

Interesting fact about that game is that Richard Sherman was a WR for Stanford and had a crucial 4th down catch on 4th and 20 on the game winning drive.

Stanford over USC in CFB is a good mention.
It does not get enough attention.
