re: Etiquette on going for the green

How far is the shot? From 250+ just smash if inside that wait. If you hit the green from 250+ it's is a lot easier to apologize.
Then again, a number of touring pros are always going for par 4s with the groups on the green (Doral #16), some knowing full well they can get it there others getting a decent bounce. Understand this is apples/oranges but pros hit into others far more than average golfers and their odds are 9/10 vs 1/10.

B is the wrong answer every single time
A is correct

I'd say A. BUT if you know you can only ROLL it on, just go for it, and apologize when you're up there.
Scenario: If I'm 270 from a green, I know my 3 wood flies 245 - It's possible it can roll up to the green, but it's unlikely. I know it's not going to injure anyone, and I'm not holding anyone up.
You can only do that once in a round. You do it twice, then you're a dick. You pretty much have to be invisible to the group in front after that.

B. But don’t apologize. Look them in the eye and say, “Nitro. ”
Establish dominance, pick a Sonic, deliver bidness.

I have a hard time believing the average drive is 220... That seems awfully short.

Average is definitely 220. Honestly, I think that's even higher than it should be considering what I see.
As far as "going for it in 2," I say go for it unless you have the chance of being 30 yards or in on the group in front of you. I hate to hear the thud sound of a shot coming in while I am trying to putt as it is quite distracting. But that's just my opinion.

In my younger days when I could hit par 5's in 2 I would just wait for the group to clear the green, I don't have that problem anymore,I have to play for position.
Hell I have trouble hitting some par 4's in regulation

This reminds me of an episode a few years back. My foursome was playing a course that has a reachable par 4 for the big hitters. There is water on both sides of the green.
The group behind us had a big hitter and he hit his drive while we were on the green. His drive was pin high but landed in the water to our left. He teed it up again and his drive was again pin high but landed in the water to our right. So he tees it up again and this time his drive is pin high off to the side of the green. The whole time we were staring back at him wondering what the hell he was doing.
One of my playing partners had enough after his third drive. He goes over and picks the ball up and starts walking toward the big hitter who was in his cart driving down down the cart path. They get into a shouting match and it was obvious there was going to be fisticuffs. We restrained our playing partner but not before he throws the ball into the water.

A.
If the course is backed up enough that the group behind you is waiting to tee off while you are waiting for someone to clear the green (regardless if you think you can reach it or not), deciding to hit or wait a few minutes for them to clear shouldn't cause the people behind you to get pissed off. They'll be waiting on you regardless on every hole, as you'll be waiting for the people in front of you as well.

i use a gps shot tracker and i get people arguing with me from time to time when i tell them they just drove it 245 and they think they hit it 280
i don't much into the argument since they can think whatever they want to think
my average drive is around 250ish and I'm as long or longer than 90% of the guys I play with

In our regular game, we take up 3-4 tee times. #1 is drivable, when the group ahead of me is hitting their 2nd shots, they wait for me to go at it if I want to.
We also will move out the fairway on a par 5, let the group behind tee off while the green clears. Small stuff mikenhat can help the whole course move along.
