I'm in a fortunate situation, when I do get to work. There isn't any member who has been chastised for cheapness.

having dinner I tip on the food, not the alcohol
What? Not the bill total? That’s absurd.

If you order ice tea or a cold drink, do you back the cost of those items out of the bill, as well, so that they aren't included in your tip?

No, because I typically get a refill or two of that $2.75 iced tea.

So you're ok with giving a waiter $200 to open a $1000 bottle of wine just as you would be ok with giving the same waiter $20 to open a $100 bottle the same way with the same cork screw?
No, but I do tip on alcohol, unlike the person to whom I was responding.
I also recognize that tipping for bottles of bud at a dive bar carries a different tipping standard than having a cocktail at an upscale place or eating in a Michelin starred restaurant. Just as I wouldn't slip the dive bar bartender a $20 for opening my bottle of bud, I also wouldn't insist on the dive bar tipping standards at those other places.

6 glasses of wine per bottle? You guys must be drinking the gallon bottles of screw-top Mogen David.....I was being generous. 5 glasses is probably about right.

do you tip on the "per drink" standard, or the total of the wine bill
Total of the bill. When I waited tables that's how they figured our taxable income, total of our sales. Don't know if it's still done that way, but that's how it was done then.

Oh look, another thread to point out all the cheap asses!
Very obvious who has never worked in the service industry in these threads.
If you are ordering $300 bottles of wine...you can afford to tip based on the total bill. Anything else is you just acting like a broke dick a-hole.

Always subtract the total for drinks when you eat out.
Tax too.
Tip for the food.
If your bill is $200 and includes the tax and a $75 bottle of wine and your tip is 20% of $200, you’re a sucker.

No kidding. For a board full of ballers there are some cheap sons of bitches up in this thread.

You don't tip on the booze at a table. The server does no extra work whether I order a $20 bottle or a $200 bottle. $1-2/ drink if you order at the bar.
this is false. I haven't been a server since college but if the bartender has to make the drink the server has to tip out the bartender at the end of the night. So by you not tipping on your drinks your cheapass is screwing your server over.

Nurse nailed it. 20% of total bill is standard. Anything less for good service keep your broke arse home.
