Your server probably has to tip a percentage out to the bartender for those drinks your not tipping on.

Weird first post, but yeah. That's how bartenders at non-college, low-volume bars get paid.

Your server most likely has to tip out a percentage of her tips to the bar based on her alcohol sales.

OK. You're old, I get it. We'll all get there one day. I too remember when payphones were on every corner, and they cost $0.25.

So you're ok with giving a waiter $200 to open a $1000 bottle of wine just as you would be ok with giving the same waiter $20 to open a $100 bottle the same way with the same cork screw?

It's going to be awesome to throw this back in your face in 15 years.

Yes but because I build the tip into the cost of the wine before I order it. Not too hard to realize a 1000 dollar bottle is really 1200. If you can't justify that in your mind don't order it. Stop at the liquor store on the way home

The server has to tip the bar a certain percentage to the bar based on the bar sales no matter what you tip. Where i worked it was 8%. So if you only drink alcohol all night and tipped 10% your server is making 2% tips.
Don’t be cheap.

Protip: Literally the same age

I think we discussed this last week, but most of my job is pouring out $400-$3000 bottles of wine so I MAY be a little biased.

Tipping on wine is a separate matter; tip the wine steward if he or she provided a service, that is appropriate

Tipping on wine is not necessarily a function of the wine's price. Many people include a tip on the wine but unless a special service was provided in connection with the wine, a flat $10-$15 tip on wine is acceptable.

You're right, that sucks, but it is not the customer's responsibility. Tipping is a horrible system, and remember it is completely optional.

And no, I don't stiff servers.

If someone tipped me that much on an expensive varietal, I'd bitch to a manager, and the manager would half-arse inform the guest that you can't do that.

20% and leave it at that.

If you buying multiple $120 bottles of wine at dinner, are you really worried about the tip?
