What common sense, based on that logic why should there be a larger tip on $50.00 sirloin vs. a $10.00 burger, the server did no additional work?

The idea that any tip should be based on a percentage of the cost of a meal or drink is ludicrous in the first place. I'm' not against tipping, but a tip should be based on the amount of time and effort the server gave.
Why should anyone tip more for a server to bring you a $50 steak than you would a $10 steak? The work is the same on both.
Once again, not against tipping, but this whole tipping thing is a sham.

Because when you're eating at a place where the steaks are $50, as opposed to $10, there is a different level of service.
It's almost as if some of you rarely eat anywhere other than the Golden Corral or Popeye's. As I mentioned earlier, it's not even the fact that you're cheap (that's fine in and of itself). It's that you proudly beat your chests about being cheap and condemn others who aren't so.
I find it odd.

Table of four at a nice restaurant:
Patron 1 - $6.00 soup, $16.00 entree, $2.50 ice tea (refilled twice), $5.00 dessert = $29.50
Patron 2 - $10 appetizer, $34.00 entree, $8.50 beer (x3), 8.00 dessert = $60.50
Patron 3 - $6.00 soup, $16.00 entree, $2.50 ice tea (refilled twice), $5.00 dessert = $29.50
Patron 4 - $6.00 soup, $16.00 entree, $2.50 ice tea (refilled twice), $5.00 dessert = $29.50
The exact same level of service was provided to Patron 2 as was provided to Patrons 1, 3 and 4.
Why should Patrons 1, 3 and 4 have to pay the same tip as Patron 2?

How did you possibly get that I have a problem with tipping whatever is considered customary from my post? It is almost as if some of you rarely read the post you reply to or even attempt to grasp the context. You can get a $10 burger in the same place that has a $50 steak, the level of service is the same, and I would tip the same percentage. The point of which was to refute the other poster's logic that there is no more work done by the server on a $200 bottle of wine vs a $20 dollar bottle therefore the tip should be the same for both bottles.

I once dated a waitress that worked at a restaurant that shared all the tips among the waiters, cooks, bartenders, and busboys. Not sure if this is common, but I didn't realize it happened.

A co-worker worked as a waiter in college, and it was an uber-nice place that used a sommelier (wine steward). The wine steward would make recommendations, take the wine order, and also service the tables for the wine. If my co-worker's tips for the night averaged 20%, he would have to pay the sommelier 20% each bottle of wine served at his tables.

Tip on dinner service. If they're service is above par, over 20%. If service is par or almost 20%. If service is just terrible 10%. If service is beyond terrible 0%.

This argument is so dumb. The server doesn’t do anything extra if you order a $50 steak or a $5 ham and cheese sandwich. You tip 20% no matter what when you dine at a restaurant.
They have to tip out the bartenders a percentage of their alcohol sales. So they are paying for you to drink if you don’t tip on your drinks. Think people.

Good service aka standard service meaning. You got the order right, kept drinks full, made sure everything went smoothly, and didn't spill drinks on grandmas new argyle. I'm not rich by any stretch of the imagination but I have enough decency to tip my server properly or stay home.

The server in almost every restaurant pays the bartender for the drinks he serves you (bottles of wine). It’s called tip out. Depending on the place servers keep about 10-12% of the standard 20% check on the whole bill.
