Owner says all of you need to quit flocking to chain restaurants and to raise your culinary standards.

Any business is tough business, but especially in the restaurant industry. Long hours, away from family and still somewhat a cash business, where things can go missing, i.e. cash, food and drinks and simply not enough margins to make it work.

After nearly five years in business, The Pelican House in Baton Rouge will close this weekend.
In a press release, chef Gavin Jobe said that the restaurant and bar will "serve its last guests and close its doors for good" on Sunday, March 4.
The Pelican House opened in March 2013 at 2572 Citiplace Court and recently made a full transition from a bar to a restaurant. While last year's rebrand "has been beneficial," the release stated that the move "has not been quite enough."
"A difficult location, unfavorable lease conditions and unforeseen costly building repairs are all influencing factors in our decision," the release stated. "But the biggest single factor (for closing) is passion."

In a follow-up interview, Jobe estimated that nearly $50,000 was spent in the past year alone on unexpected repairs. Among those costs is a new hot water heater, air conditioning plumbing repairs, and additional kitchen equipment. The estimation does not include cost of kitchen expansion.
quote:
"Baton Rouge, my hometown, I love you, but I implore you to raise your culinary standards," he said. "There are a few great chefs in this town making great food. Support those people!
"Stop flocking to chain restaurants. Stop asking chefs to change their menus, and stop accepting mediocrity. Ask for seasonal, local (when it makes sense), creative food, and embrace the chefs and restaurants who deliver it to you.

Citiplace should be a great place for restaurants. Towne Center is mostly chains, and there are a ton of wealthy people just down Corporate.

Sorry, endless breadsticks at Olive Garden are too good to pass up.

Went there once, wasn't impressed.

He needs to quit crying. The restaurant business is tough. Places like Applebee's and Chili's clearly have what it takes to succeed. He doesn't.

Yeah, I've never been to PH, but I've never heard great things about it. I've never been encouraged to go there, so it couldn't have been too great.

Owner needs to do a better job of advertising because I had no fricking clue it was a restaurant.

Pelican House - We have 120 "craft" beer taps, 95 of which are BMC and Abita products.

BR has issues with chain restaurants but Pelican House has been a frick up pretty much from day one.

I agree with him. I rarely eat at a chain that's not fast food. That area in general has declined somewhat imo. Especially the shopping center where the Fox and the Hound used to be.

He's right about chains but it's still not as bad as a shite ton of places in the midwest. I am truly blessed to have moved here and experienced all the great food. I have family in the midwest and whenever we visit I can't tell you how many times a nice family dinner is spent at like Applebee's or Ruby Tuesday's at their choosing. I pity them honestly for not having near the depth and quality food we have down south.

Pretty sure it was on the news. The food from before didn’t seem impressive. Guess they haven’t improved on it.

$10 for all you can eat wings is a great deal! That’s the sort of deal you can never find at a local restaurant.

I tried to go there twice over the last couple years when i was working in BR. Both times were right after work. Once, they said I had to pay a cover because a band was playing later that night. The other time, I wasn't allowed to sit at the bar because a private party was being held in that area later that night. Both times, the events had not started, and I wasn't planning on hanging out all night.
Never made it beyond the entry. Oh well. It looked busy both times.
