How good are AR15 type rifles for hunting?

I have never been a hunter and obviously I'm not well versed on firearms. I saw an article (from what I assume to be a biased source ) claiming they are terrible as a hunting firearm. Is this true?

Depends on what you’re hunting.

It’s as good as any other firearm.

Good for hunting hogs from a helicopter

Depends on what you're hunting. Small to medium game they're fine. Make great hog guns.
I know some people who use them for wolf, coyote, fox...

They’re great and the AR10 variant is even better

absolutely fricking perfect for hog hunting.

People claim for hogs but unless you are hunting from a helicopter in West Texas then you aren't using an AR. If you are using an AR in the woods for hunting then you are more often than not an idiot and nobody wants to be around you.

Lightweight, low recoil, many calibers, easily customized with grips, stocks, sights....yeah terrible for hunting.

They're better for keeping a potential suppressive and tyrannical government in check.

I hunt with my 5.56 all the time. I stalk, and the modular style of the AR makes it very easy to carry around through sometimes thick brush.

Depends on what you're hunting. The standard AR-15 is chambered in for .223 Remington or 5.56mm, but many AR makers offer are quite a few different caliber variations, including, but not limited to: 7.62X39, 6.5 Creedmore, 6.8 SPC, .243 .300 Whisper, .50 Beowulf, .458 SOCOM and more. You can even find AR-15s chambered in common handgun calibers such at 9mm, .40S&W and .45ACP to name a few.

Good for hogs that can be in larger groups, still takes a few to drop them. Not powerful enough for deer

Not the best for large deer or elk due to their relatively small caliber bullets, but they are perfect for hogs, squirrels, wolves, coyotes, etc.

Depends on what you're hunting and how much challenge you want.
Keep in mind, however, having quicker firing (compared to bolt action or bow hunting) means less likely to leave a wounded animal running into the woods and suffering.

Not bad at all, but I have mine in case there is a black swan event where I need to kill people in self defense, that’s why we have the 2nd Amendment you may note.

AR15s are a little light in the britches unless you’re varmint hunting. AR10s are fine hunting rifles for most large game.
