Sitting in the waiting room at the doc and this old baw is going on with his buddy about black lives matter and shite. Then he busts out the line that slavery wasn't racist because white people have been enslaved too

I think you missed his point because you were busy judging his accent.

By definition, he's correct...
But we can't rationally discuss it without baggage, so I'll step out now.

Slavery isn't, strictly, racist, even in the American experience.
Many white folks were subject to indentured servitude in North America, and there were very wealthy people of color in the South with large slave holdings.
Now, was slavery mired in racism? Certainly. Is slavery in North America one of the most complex socioeconomic issues in all of human history? Absolutely.
It isn't as simple as "Southern white people = bad - everyone else = Saints." But that is as complex as most Americans are willing to accept.

Slavery involved the ownership of other human beings of a different race.
Racism is the inherent belief in the superiority or inferiority of human beings of a different race.
Slavery might have been motivated by greed or historically accepted practices instead of some affirmative racist movement, but slavery was absolutely "about racism."

Well you're pretty stupid if you think euros went to Africa to get slaves because they're black. They went there to get slaves because they knew Africans had been capturing and selling their own to Muslims for thousands of years.

So the black people who sold other black people into slavery were racists? I thought they did it for money or other economic advantages.

racism - a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human racial groups determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one's own race is superior and has the right to dominate others or that a particular racial group is inferior to the others.

(and because they thought black Africans were inferior to them)

Was it? So Africans rounding up other Africans and shipping them/selling them makes the Africans that sold them racist?

Oh Lord, if my Irish buddy read this he would go on one of his 20 minute tirades about how the Irish were enslaved.

Every race has been enslaved at some point in history. I don't ever see anyone pulling the woe is me card for the Chinese in this country.

Racism -
quote:
prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against someone of a different race based on the belief that one's own race is superior.
Not ALL slavery is racist (when one can point to situations where slaves are of the same race as the slavers), but slavery in the Southern US was most assuredly racist.
Louisiana Commissioner Geo. Williamson in a letter to Texas encouraging them to join the Confederacy:
quote:
Louisiana looks to the formation of a Southern confederacy to preserve the blessings of African slavery

And sometimes of the same race.
Setting aside domestic production of slaves, most African slaves started out that way being enslaved by other Africans and then sold to white people prior to the middle passage.
So, there's all of it.
quote:
absolutely "about racism."
No. "Mired" in racism - not "absolutely" about racism. The issue's complexity is blinding, I'll admit, but it's there. It isn't "racism /discussion" no matter how hard some want to make it that way.
Posted on 2/9/18 at 9:19 am to Pettifogger
Well one race was discovering the new world and the other was still enslaving their own. That little gap of development may be why they felt superior.

Are we really going to have an entire thread based on what is likely an inaccurate representation of a discussion involving people none of us witnessed?
My input.
Clearly, for slavery to flourish, it required a racist mindset. Were there blacks who held black slaves? Yeah. Does not really change primary point.
But, I somehow suspect that the overheard conversation revolved around the silly notion that whites are somehow evil racists by default. A very common belief among the virtue signalers.
