Racism is the inherent belief in the superiority or inferiority of human beings of a different race.

If it was purely economic, there would have been white slaves too.

We didn’t have slavery simply because whites thought blacks a lower form of humanity, but that’s one of the conditions which allowed for slavery here.

“Slavery wasn’t racist” is just willfully dumb in discussions of slavery in America.

No. "Mired" in racism - not "absolutely" about racism. The issue's complexity is blinding, I'll admit, but it's there. It isn't "racism /discussion" no matter how hard some want to make it that way.

There isn't much to parse here.

American slavery was built on the concept of racism. Racism was inherent to American slavery.

Slavery in a global, macro sense isn't necessarily "racist." But I'm not even sure how one could plausibly thread an intellectual needle and claim American slavery wasn't racist.

Why are we even having this discussion NOW? What purpose does it serve?

the first slave owner in America was a black man, you can trace slavery back several thousand years, African slaves were bought from tribes who conquered other tribes...

Of course.

Racism and slavery are inseparably intertwined (in America).

This is precisely the definition we should be using and it IS a key concept to African slavery in the Americas. Therefore, I state, unequivocally, that our experience with slavery is mired, frick it - deeply mired in racism.

Doesn't explain the black slaveowner experience. Doesn't explain indentured servitude. Doesn't explain a shite ton of things. But, one cannot credibly deny the racist component of it - it just isn't the end of the discussion, as I have suggested.

Well one race was discovering the new world and the other was still enslaving their own. That little gap of development may be why they felt superior.

So we've moved on from "slavery isn't racist" to "racism might have been justified at the time."

Good talk guys

Exactly, you can't deny many slaveholders were racist and believed they were right to keep slaves because they were of an inferior race.

Through time not all slaveholders were racists, but when talking about slavery in the US, I'd say most were.

Imagine how ruffled panties will get when we get to “racism is still justified today.”

I am sure you are aware that because south Louisiana had such a high percentage of "free persons of color" before the Civil War, much higher than the rest of the future Confederacy, that thousands of slaves were owned by black people. Were these black slave owners racist?

The frick it isn't. It CANNOT be irrelevant that black folks were buying and selling their own in this same economy. That's precisely on point. It was more about money and power than skin color.

Blacks weren't bought and sold because they were black. They were bought and sold because they were on the market. It was just coincidental that they were black and the law conveniently looked the other way. Humanity failed at a lot of steps, but not at the simplistic one, "White people - bad, black people - good" - more like, "People are bad if left to their own devices, black, white, purple, plaid, ecru, mother of pearl, green, brown, orange, etc."

re: Just overheard a guy say "slavery wasn't racist"
To clarify my previous post:

The act of slavery is, in itself, not "racist" - it depends on CONTEXT
When Northerners were enslaving and forcing Irish immigrants into indentured servitude, that wasn't "racist" as they were both white, but it was certainly BIASed. If one drills down further, though, it is a "sort" racism, where groups of the same "race" start viewing even the slightest changes as being a different group or "Race". Accent, hair color, cheek bones, lips, whatever.

Chinese servitude in California was certainly racist. It was a belief that, simply, that they were "better" because they were white.

Slavery isn't racist on its own. In some contexts, it is, and in some, it isn't. It cannot be lumped into a catch-all for our benefit.

One could argue that most of the country is "racist" against Southerners. Certainly bigoted, too busy patting themselves on the back for being "less racist" while keeping all their neighborhoods segregated.

Not all of us..........

Racism is never justified.

But, it's also silly to pretend that it's just some fricking accident of fate that caused people on a huge continent flush with resources to progress at a fraction of the rate of their worldwide peers.
