NASA is holding its annual Day of Remembrance today to honor the crew members of Apollo 1 and space shuttles Challenger and Columbia, as well as other NASA employees who have lost their lives while advancing space exploration.

This year marks the 15th anniversary of Columbia’s last space shuttle mission, which suffered a catastrophic and fatal end. The unfortunate event shook the science community and the public, but the lessons taken away from the incident overhauled NASA’s approach to safety concerns and future space travel.

How did they know the Challenger astronauts had dandruff?

They found their Head and Shoulders on the beach.

Lost my virginity that day . I was 15. Tragic day, but it's a day I remember both.

We had a baseball game that day. We were expecting the boom in the middle of the game. Got caught up in the game and didn't realize the boom never happened until after it was over. Got home and saw the news.

I remember waking up early to watch the news coverage and watch it pass over Louisiana. This was the first time I had the opportunity and knew about it.

I remember hearing the sound of the shuttle re-entering the atmosphere. It sounded like a wreck on the nearby interstate.

Very sad. Our community was touched personally as Captain Brown was the son of an Arlington County Circuit Judge. May they all R.I.P.

Debris fell near my house. My boss had a piece in his lawn.

I grew up in North TX and was 11 at the time I guess. I vividly remember being woken up to the windows in our house shaking. I was always interested in geology/general science, so naturally I ran out of my room to wherever my mom was screaming “is this an earthquake?”

my dad actually still has a tiny metal piece of the wreckage he found over in East Texas. just a terrible situation all around

That would be a sucky way to go. Not as bad as the Challenger though.

I remember this. I woke up on a Saturday morning as a middle schooler. My dad is infamous for being very crass and extremely politically incorrect but I remember he was very serious and sat me down to explain to me what happened as soon as I walked into the kitchen. He very rarely got in that mood
