Hoping others can weigh-in on 'older' misses as well as basketball.

1) Hiring Mike Archer instead of Steve Spurrier in '87.

Arnsparger left after '86 and our program was approaching natty competing status. The pieces were in place. I think it's well known that Spurrier wanted the job. The players prevailed, Archer was promoted from DC, and he hastily dismantled things. FTR, Spurrier would not become UF's coach until '90 and wasn't as proven as is viewed in hindsight. But he was ours for the taking. And the thought of LA WR talent playing fun-n-gun is the stuff of fantasy.

2) Losing Pat Henry to A&M after '04
Henry was a natty producing machine. Shaver has done ok since but nowhere near what Henry accomplished. For example, under Henry we won 10 straight women's outdoor NCAA titles. We've won once ('08) since - and no men's titles. A&M has won 4 men and 4 women's outdoor under Henry. I like Skip. But he whiffed big time on this.

3) Losing Ryan Perrilloux after '07
The reverberations of this are felt to this very day. How so you ask. Let me 'splain. In all of Les's asst coaching hires, the one outlier is Crowton. Why would Les ever hire him as OC is a mystery. His reputation was playing wide-open on offense. And it worked to perfection in '07. If you want to watch magic on offense go back and watch the Va Tech or tOSU games in '07. And it was to get better with Ryan in '08. But Perrilloux is dismissed and we start '08 with Andrew Hatch and RS Fr Jarrett Lee. Hatch would get injured and it was all on JL as defending national champions. You know the story. After '08, Les installed restrictor plates on Crowton and from which he (Les) would go to his Tiger grave with. If Ryan plays in '08, we likely still lose to UF and maybe OM (they were a force in late '08). And if so, Les has no need to go into a shell on offense. And if he doesn't we would probably have NCs in '11 and '12. And Les would still be coaching here . . .

ETA:
4) Not beating FSU in '79. See Ponchy Tiger's explanation on p. 2. He explains it well.

Perilloux is the biggest, IMHO. He has jinxed us since. I wish Colt McCoy would have stayed.

Oklahoma St. losing to Iowa State in 2011.

We could've gone down as the best team in history.

Losing RP was a blow, but Miles teams threw for pretty much the same yds and att when he had the right QBs in '05, '06, '07, '12 and '13, with '08 being a deadly outlier for "right QB".
I agree he installed restrictor plates on Crowton after '08 due to forcing a passing game without proper QB, but opened it back up some in '12 and '13.

Rudy Macklin ripping his shooting hand open when going up for a rebound in the elite 8 final final at the Dome.
That team with him healthy rolls through Philly.

Perrilloux wasn’t lost, he did it to himself. Hard to call it a missed opportunity for the program when the player was just a jackass that couldn’t get it together off the field.

Imagine what Tommy Hodson would have done with Spurrier coaching him and calling the plays for 3 years?

Those are obvious missed opportunities.

I'd mention all of the misses at qb LSU has had.

The fact that energy prices were sky high and skip Bertman didn’t even care enough to get pat henry locker rooms is quite telling of his ego

Not beating Florida State at home in 1979. At the time Bobby Bowden had a offer on the table from LSU to replace Cholly Mac. He has stated that he was undecided and told his wife. If we can go into Baton Rouge and beat LSU I know we can build something at Florida State. If we can’t then it is probably best if we take the LSU job. Florida State won 24-19 and the rest is history. But it does raise the question of what might have happened if he had come to LSU.
