Because people are stupid, our Governor feels coaching salaries should be capped

Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards believes that multi-million dollar college football coaching salaries are “obscene” and a cap to limit them should be in place. Edwards, during a meeting with The Advocate editorial board last week, expressed his concern over escalating staff salaries that have “gotten out of control.” Louisiana's flagship college football program, LSU, is one of the country’s leaders in football staff spending.
quote:
“I am concerned. I’m not as concerned as I would be if those were tax dollars being spent,” Edwards said. “I do think that there has to be some look nationally at some sort of salary caps for the organizations. This is an arms race, and it’s gotten out of control. Some of the salaries and buyouts are obscene and they can create all sorts of problems. “Everybody at this table knows that those are not taxpayer dollars but the general public doesn’t necessarily know that,” he continued, referencing the Advocate reporters and editors in the meeting. “And what about those faculty members at LSU and elsewhere who haven’t had a raise of any size in many, many years and they’re seeing what’s happening in athletics?”

Ummm it’s none of his frickibg business. You could argue that everyone in pro sports is overpaid but there is such a thing as market value. It’s funny. A politician complaining about coaching salaries. Stick to ur own dirty corrupt bullshite and stfu about LSU football. As he said, it’s not taxpayer money. Wtf?! Do they just want to kill the program altogether?

What don't the dems get about supply and demand?
There are thousands of BS professors that LSU could hire to teach geology 101, but there are very few coaches that can win a NC.
Given that good coaches are in a far fewer supply, they are also in much higher demand. This means coaches get millions and professors get thousands.
Add to that the fact that the football program makes a ton of money for the school and (as noted) don't receive their salaries from the state. So STFU Gov.

I don't get what his beef is. The football program funds itself as well as other athletic programs. If the football program wasn't making money, a lot of sports at LSU would be non-existent. That puts people (coaches & trainers) out of jobs and takes away student athletic scholarships.

our governor surely know that the only thing this worthless state has going for it is LSU Football has won 8 games a year this entire century.

Problem is it's not state money in LSU's case.
LSU is self supporting and uses no state tax dollars for athletic salaries.
On the flip side, the state has cut funding to LSU so much that all the top talent has left LSU. LSU can't raise tuition without the Legislature approval is a joke because the market should bear that out. You can't have it both ways.

its also flawed logic....the private money is there to be spent on football, if that money went away, the person wouldn't say "oh hell I guess I'll donate to the math dept. instead"

If those faculty members wanted to make more money, they should have chosen a different career path, such as coaching. I'm not saying I think professor's/teacher's make the money they deserve, but they know you don't go into that profession to get rich. That's why most do it out of love and passion for teaching.
And, you're worth what someone will pay you. A great coach that creates a great football program can bring millions of dollars to a university and its athletic program. Thus, making them worth the money they're being paid.
I may think some of the money these coaches are making is a little crazy, but I complete understand it. It's a shame our governor hates our free market economy. But, he is a socialist Democrat, so it makes sense.

This right here should tell you everything you need to know. The reason he is saying this and the reason Jimbo was not approved a few years back.
Public perception. What a joke.

He’s more worried about how this LOOKS than the way it IS. I hope that the faculty is smart enough to know how this all works. If not, then maybe they shouldn’t be on staff.
Maybe this is his way of getting the message out that coaching salaries are not paid with tax dollars to clear up some confusion while also voicing that he doesn’t agree with salary altitude. Just politics.

Whoever voted for this clown stand up and reveal yourself. Typical liberal BS worrying about one group making more than another.
Posted on 1/24/18 at 12:45 pm to BilJ
I think the money politicians make is obscene.
