How much rent did you pay to live at home?

For those of you who may have staying in the cradle a little longer than normal or parents who have kids dug in.

I’m interested in what your parents charged you to stay there. When I graduated high school and was working, my parents charged me $100 every two weeks or so. They said it was to help with groceries but I know they did it to teach me value

I have a 21 year old that is about to start “helping us out”. He just don’t know it yet

What’s the going rate?

Nothing because my parents love me and aren't poor. But I only stayed in their house for breaks during college. Although, I was completely financially dependent on them

My dad didn't charge me rent. I lived with him until I was a Jr in college but I did all of the yardwork. We had a maid so I didn't really clean much though. He hired a yard guy right after I moved out

I didn’t pay rent because it was fricked up health circumstances that led me home and they knew I didn’t want to stay there.

I cooked almost every night, bought groceries, cleaned the house, mowed the lawn, etc. I even kept mowing the lawn and kept up with the fertilizing schedule for another year or so after I left. It's the least I could do.

I lived at home for 6 months after I graduated while waiting on my fiancée to graduate and we were looking for a house. My dad made me pay half of every bill that came in and charged me $500 a month rent. When I got married 9 months later he gave my wife a check for everything I'd paid him. He said it was the only way he knew my dumbass would "save" money.

After college I did a 3 month stint, rent free, left the state for an opportunity. 3 years later moved back for 2 more months before finding something else and moving out.

Never paid rent but they didn’t have to ‘encourage’ me to move out.... living with your parents in your 20’s sucks, I don’t know why anyone would ‘want’ to do that.

In my gen-x generation it was a stigma to live with your parents as a young adult, but obviously that’s changed and it has become normalized.

Oh well, don’t care, not my problem. Y’all do what you want to do.

I didn’t live with my parents after high school even when I moved back to finish at SELU. I was the youngest and my dad said they had gotten used to an empty house and I was welcomed to visit any time I wanted, but don’t bring a bag.

My kids will get the same love from me.

Better question: how long is a child allowed to continue being a dependent?

As long as they are pursuing an education? That can easily turn into 10 years of BS certificates and degrees.

As long as they are looking for a job? What if they can't land one that will pay $500/month rent?

I know of a few dependents who live at home and are now 26, 27, 28 years old and are not recent recipients of a Ph.D., M.D., or J.D.

Our oldest came home after living away for 5 years for school. Worked with my husband on the farm while he was looking for a job which took him longer than he wanted/expected. Once he started working, he was saving a nice bit of money by staying here and is moving out in the next week or two.

We didn't "charge" him anything. I even did his laundry from time to time just because I was doing laundry and didn't mind.

I figure he'll still be coming home now and again to grab a meal which is fine with me.

There are parents that charge their kids rent? That seems pretty shitty. Either get them to move out or let them stay for free

I had a friend whose parents charged him when he returned home for a few years. They gave it all back to him when he bought a place.
