One trilogy to rule them all, one trilogy to find them, One trilogy to bring them all and in the darkness bind them.

I'll give you LoTR is the GOAT trilogy if we can all agree that The Hobbit trilogy didn't need to be made. The Hobbit is a children's book ffs.

Having said that, it's almost always the 3rd one that screws it up.

the LOTR trilogy doesn't avoid this. ROTK wasn't that good

I won't say it shouldn't have been made. It should have only been one movie, though.

LOTR is an epic. So just by nature it has an advantage. Most other trilogies are contained to just their few characters and a few settings. LOTR literally had the entire tolkein universe. Hundreds of characters, dozens of locations. Just to match that with anything would be close to impossible. The only thing that could come close to that in terms of world building thats just as popular would be Star Wars or Game of Thrones. Both of which are obviously not trilogies so they wouldn't be eligible here.

I will put the recent Planet of the Apes trilogy against anything.

Disagree. They needed to make the Hobbit movie. They just needed to not frick it up so bad.

Agree. They knew they had a cash cow and mailed it in. Could have been great if it had been given the same care as LOTR.

I think the advantage is that it lays out a nearly impossible task in the first movie, and takes the rest of the trilogy to fulfill this. There's one driving plot point throughout the entire series, even if there are other stories that develop in each movie to make that happen. With a lot of other trilogies, there's usually a different story for each movie

That entire thing was an abortion of a trilogy. I honestly did not believe peter Jackson could have done so poor of a job. Loved the book, hated everything about the movies

Also in the running if you consider it an actual trilogy.

I would suggest that Star Wars the OT and LOTR is the best movie trilogies. For all those who complain about EWOKS in the first one, I will remind you that Tolkien had talking and walking trees and hobbits. Not sure there is much difference there.

You're wrong about it not being good but it was the weakest of the three films due to two major flaws. 1) Revealing that the Rider of Rohan that picked up Merry was Eowyn instead of waiting to reveal that it was a woman until the Witch King of Angmar taunted her about not being able to kill him because "no living man" may kill him. 2) Whatever the heck that dumb subplot was with Aragorn being attacked by the wargs and falling off a cliff into a river. I would listen to an argument that the ghost army destroying the forces of Sauron in the siege of Gondor is a pretty big flaw but I'm willing to let that one slide because it didn't really change that much about the story.

Of course its a contender.

I'd go Indiana Jones and of course Star Wars has cultural cachet. My tastes are a bit towards some smaller trilogies: the Evil Dead, Trois Coleurs, and the Before series by Linklater.

I loved the Cornetto trilogy answer. Pretty great stuff.
