Its not a candidate.

You are flatout hard pressed to find a challenger.

It is very very rare for a big budget trilogy to be planned out from the start like LOTR. Typically they make a stand off movie, and see how it goes before committing to a trilogy even if they have source subject material.

That leaves them running at a handicap to start with.

Absolutely not.

It's behind The Evil Dead trilogy and the Back to the Future trilogy.

Wut?

Its a series that literally redefined itself in two of the three movies.

Have you seen the 3rd one? That one alone takes it out of the argument.

Having said that, it's almost always the 3rd one that screws it up.

ROTJ
Nolan's Batmans
The Godfather

The Matrix just said frick it and threw the towel in on the second one, but that damn highway chase scene was badass.

Toy Story gets a mention. But LotR is the bestest of them all.

Its not a candidate, it is the GOAT. As someone else said, you just don't see that type of production, the whole thing planned out from the beginning, filming it all at once with additional shooting over 3 years, its amazing what they accomplished.

It’s not just a candidate, it’s a front runner in the debate. For me it is the GOAT trilogy no doubt. All 3 movies are fantastic which is hard to find from a trilogy

For me it's number 1, with number 2 going to Toy Story (although, after they make TS4, I guess I can't count it anymore)

Gets way too much hate. Yes the Ewoks were annoying but it does a great job of wrapping things up.....or so we thought.
