There was no such thing as elf on a shelf for me growing up and I did just fine. I believed in Santa till I was 8 or 9 then stopped. Same as my kids will

Kids are young and innocent once. Blink and all the innocent magical things they believe in will be gone and you’ll be dealing with teenagers and their headaches.
My son is seven and at this point would be disappointed it I simply moved him from his spot. Every night we do something silly or outlandish. He wakes up earlier than I normally get him up for school to go look for him. And usually cracks up laughing. Several times during the year he talks about his elf and how much he misses him.
It’s not about me and what I think is cool or a pain in the arse. It’s about some extra magic and happiness I can bring to my son.
And not one picture of what we do is posted to a Facebook account. And we don’t use it as he’s watching you so you better be good thing.

I don't know...it's pretty hard.
Because you know, if that was the only thing I had to do every night, it wouldn't be a burden. But it's item 9464838 on my daily list of crap that I have to do. So yeah, when I finally pass out in my bed with every part of my body limp from exhaustion and then remember I didn't move the stupid fricking elf... and have to drag my tired arse out of bed? It's a burden. A YUGE BURDEN.

Correct. The issue isn't moving the Elf, it's remembering to move the Elf. Even if the kids seem to pay little or no attention to the Elf, they'll sure notice if he's in the same place the next day.

I don’t plan on doing the elf thing. But a girl I work with (who has refused to do it too) had her daughter come home one day asking why Santa didn’t like he, and if she wouldn’t get gifts this year.. All her friends have the elf on a shelf thing. So the mom finally gave into it.
My youngest son was the only one who ever showed interest in it and asked me a similar question once. I told him Santa decided we didn't need one because he was such a good boy. I just made it out like everyone who has an elf has questionable behavior.

This is a good parent.
The rest of you seem to be really shitty parents.

frick Elf on the Shelf.
About to tell the oldest (10) that it's bullshite. Pretty sure she knows she's just keeping the charade going. She complained tonight about him showing up in boring places/ways.

This is what my wife and I think about it. Kids only believe in magic once. And it’s really not a pain to move him around and having him doing goofy things. One night I taped a ping pong ball to his hand and had him dunking in my sons nerf hoop. Another night we put him headfirst in a cookie jar like he got stuck. My kids get a kick out of looking for him. And we also do it without the threats.
But if you’re one of those Pinterest parents and have him bake cookies and get all elaborate then yeah it’s a huge pain - but in my opinion those parents do it more for likes on social media than for their kids.

I feel like even the ones who don't get all overboard with it are doing it for the likes as well.
If not, you'd never see it on FB.

You guys act like their is only one way to spread magic and happiness to your kids life and it’s through some lame arse commercialized piece of #metoo garbage.
Be creative, branch out and find your own path. Your kid will remember that far more than this thing.
Edit: I like the people who claim they don’t Facebook it, that’s the entire reason this thing exists. That’s why you have it. If it wasn’t for Facebook and other social media you would be clueless about the damn thing. Own up to it instead of trying to act all above it.

My daughter pissed me off so bad yesterday with her attitude I suggested that we make hers disappear and give my son a gift early. I'd love to see the look on her face. She's 3, for reference. Haha.

We did it for a few years and my son loved it. But he’s too old for it now at 11.
My daughter who’s 4 never took any interest in finding him so he ended up in the trash last weekend. No one has even noticed he’s missing. I couldn’t be happier.

Wife is a teacher and her kids are jacked up for the Elf on the shelf but I lost that sumbitch when I picked up decorations last year.
We have a flamingo with a Santa hat on it, I told her to bring it and tell them it's the Flamingo on the Floor. Maybe it'll catch on and you'll be bitching about it on here in a few years.

If they were so damn innocent you wouldn't have to lie to them and trick them into being good with some goofy arse fake elf bullshite!!!

I don’t mind it. My kids really get a kick out of it. It ain’t about whether I like or it not. If my kids enjoy the tradition I’m all for it.

Did it for a couple years with my oldest son who's 10 now (didn't really move him much). He hasn't been out in the last 3 years though. My 5 year old doesn't ask or care and better that way. Another great marketing scheme.

After seeing this thread, I realized my two a-hole elves didn't perform their magic last night and I had to prod their little asses in gear before the boys woke up.

My kids aren't little shits that I need to lie to to get them to listen.
frick that elf shite.

I have a 4 year old and we don't do elf on a shelf. It's dumb and my child isn't simple enough to need that type of motivation.
