Good home defense revolver?

I really like the S&W 627, but the SW governor's versatility has me a bit intrigued.
I'm really looking for a revolver with a 7-8 capacity with good stopping power. 4" barrell.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Why limit yourself to a revolver? If you are stuck with a handgun, go with a good full-sized or compact 9mm semi-auto. Glock 19 and 17, S&W M&P, HK VP9, Walther PPQ, SIG 226 or 229, will all do a great job. If you are not limited to only a handgun, get an AR15.

The 686 is a 7 shot .357 I think

Ruger GP100 7-shot .357 Mag or a Redhawk 8-shot .357 Mag.
Also, nobody is going to be lacking in defensive firepower with any .357 Mag revolver.

I'd like my wife to be able to use it as well and like the idea of her having a simple revolver to use in an emergency, especially when shes not gun sauvy.. we have an m1a1 beast of a rifle, just need something more handheld.

You have kids in the house? If so, use a shotgun. You don't want a bullet going thru a wall hitting one of your kids.

I think if I were looking that weapon I would keep it simple and get a S&W air weight in 38. Simple, reliable and easier for the fairer sex to operate. Point and click.

Airweight if the wife is going to possibly use it, but if you handle a GP100, you'll buy it.

A semi auto is just as simple to use as a revolver. I have a few .357s and my wife hates to shoot them because of the recoil. She is border line scared of them, but on the other hand she can shoot any of my semi 9mm pistols like a champ. If I am giving my wife a gun to defend herself I am going with less recoil and more rounds every time.

All of this.
Small frame revolvers, like the air weight suck, they are nice to carry, but terrible to shoot. If it's something that's I'm a nightstand or similar, there is no reason to use it.
A full sized revolver is nice to have and to shoot, but they don't beat out a semi in any way for home defense. Semi autos are just as simple to fire, they hold more ammo and are just as reliable.

Whatever you chose, take the time and effort to get her comfortable with it.

American Rifleman had an article recently about taking a bunch of inexperienced women to shoot. They gave them instruction and let them shoot several semis and revolvers.
A bit to my surprise, they ladies much preferred the semis. They didn't mind the slide once shown how to operate it. None of the revolvers made their top picks list.
My only concern would be that they would never shoot the gun again until, 10 years later, a need arose. "Now, which way does this slide thing go?" Of course, if the home defense gun keeps one in the chamber that is not as much of a concern.

my wife can barely pull the trigger on a revolver, I know its recommended but not for her. Shotgun and AR way easier. Also the airweight is gonna kick harder

Only one of these are correct. Having to operate the slide and disengage the safety is easy, but not as easy as simply pulling the trigger. Many woman have trouble racking the slide. I've also seen plenty of semi's jam in my day. Never seen a revolver jam though.
Oh, and Hornady .38 special defense rounds out of my GP100 has a recoil comparable to a heritage .22 revolver. Essentially non existent.

Even loaded with 38 special it would.kick too hard for her?

No, they are all right.
You can leave a semi in the same condition as a revolver, pick it up and pull the trigger. People who carry and put their lives on the line are ok with the reliability of semi autos. You see any professionals carrying revolvers?
OP... I have an LCR, similar in weight to an air weight. With 38s it sucks to shoot. Nothing nice about it. No reason to go with a super light pistol to keep in the house.

Either a GP100 7 shot or a Redhawk 8 shot. Either one with a 4 or 5.5” barrel.
The new ruger lineup is perfect. Two things we’ve always needed: a 7 shot GP100 or 8 shot Redhawk. I have a serious want for a Redhawk.
My carry piece is a 3” GP100. I like it well enough, but I’d really like to have better sights, more barrel, and 1 or 2 extra rounds. That 8 shot Redhawk with 5.5” barrel is
With the 3” barrel and full power old school magnum loads the muzzle blast and flash is really too much. I shot it at night once outside and it was like looking at an arc flash. Shot it at an indoor range once and it was sooooo much louder than the other guns there. It’s pretty rediculous.

Jeese. Yeah I've been looking at the Redhawk.

Yea I’ve shot a judge before.
As a self defense gun I recommend staying away. A .357 magnum is more potent than anything you can get off the shelf to shoot out of a judge. They don’t pattern buckshot all that great. Cool guns for carrying around in the woods to shoot snakes and very fun to plink with, but for defense you are better off with a .357 magnum. With full power loads out of a full size gun .357 mag is generally regarded to be the best one-shot bad guy stopper. 125gr hollow points at 1450+ fps is about as good as it gets against 200 pound upright mammals.
