A new report shows that millennials are not having enough children to replace the generation before them.
...
The most recent data shows the number is 1.8. That means “negative” population growth.

quote:

“Millennials came of age during the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression,” the report noted. “Many saw their parents lose their jobs, their homes, and their dignity – and vowed they would not repeat those mistakes.”

A survey conducted by the Wharton School of Business found that 58% of female undergraduates did not plan to have children.

That’s nearly triple the number of female undergrads surveyed back in 1992 who said they did not plan to have children.

The Baby Boomers couldn't keep it in their pants and ruined it for everyone.

Well, if the "generation before them" was the baby boomers, then this is not really news to anyone.

Japan has gone through this over the past 30 years. Unfortunately we will replace our population with increased immigration, ala Europe

Several factors.

-Cost of education
-Rising costs of standard of living
-Period of bad economy

I'm Gen X and couldn't really keep it in my pants either. Me and the wife have replaced ourselves 1:1 though. It's too expensive to have a big family now

Yep, also theres just been a major change in how children are raised in this day and age.

Used to be you could have a few kids and they could mostly run around and be pretty independent.

Now everyone is a helicopter parent and insane about every aspect of their child's lives.

I would also say increased mobility in society in terms of where you live sort of watered down communities. How many people today are friendly with their neighbors vs 40 years ago?

There are other factors too but yeah that sounds about right.

Let’s not forget the availability of birth control. Millenials are less religious too, so there is less stigma over abortion. Nowadays if you aren’t financially prepared for a child you don’t have to have one

Look at this frickin idiot. He took 15 minutes to ring up the guy at the register and the woman in front of me. I stood in line tonight at the grocery for 17 minutes before I got rung up.

You think this guy is gonna procreate? lol

What a pathetic bunch of losers.

(I got milk for my kid, the beer is mine )

My actual guess is less stigma on birth control, empowerment of women as not just SAH moms, but as peers in the workplace, and millennial adults not getting married as much.

The cost of living has increased so dramatically that starting a family has to be a carefully planned situation.

Gone are the days of the Dad being able to work a standard 9-5 and have a stay at home wife.

This survey was only of college students. The non college millenials are still having plenty of kids.
