Is committing suicide by someone who has suffered tremendous loss excusable?

Instead of the normal “it’s selfish” responses, or is it still selfish in your opinion? I am talking about someone who lost their wife and kids or a similar level of loss. This was a pretty brutal debate at lunch today.

Anyone who responds this way to a suicide is a fricking idiot.

I'd give a pass to a man or woman that lost his children or spouse.

I agree that people who respond this way to suicide are assholes... but that doesn’t mean it’s not selfish. It’s pretty much the most selfish decision anyone could make. Having said that, I can certainly empathize with people who are feeling that low. I can’t imagine having to deal with that kind of hurt and depression.

Yep, if you can go against all basic human survival instinct and want to kill yourself, then you are clearly in a very sick mental mindset that most of us will fortunately never understand. Your an idiot if you think its selfish.

We only get one chance at life. Then its eternal nothingness.
I just cant fathom purposely ending my life for any reason. I want to live to 100 and see crazy shite.
I have no wife or kids so take it fwiw
Point being its just something most people cant relate to and its tough to comment on or even consider

Not excusable if you have children.

I struggle with the concept of human freedom vs. the inherent value of human life. I can't put myself in the position of someone who has lost their family, nor am I in a position to judge him or her. However, my religious beliefs teach me that all life is valuable, and that anyone's death will affect others.

I don't know how people live after losing a child. I don't think I could.

It is absolutely a selfish act.

Guy I knew well in high school recently killed himself.
He watched his mom suffer horribly from Huntington’s Disease while growing up. He was recently diagnosed with it. Chose to kill himself. Wasn’t married and didn’t have kids.
I don’t know that I wouldn’t have made the same choice

I wouldn't say it's "excusable", but it's more understandable.

If I lost my wife and kids I’d check out too
But first I’d go get a bunch of hookers and blow

Excusable?
Understandable, maybe.
Excusable? No, not by the way the question was posed. But not sure it’s the word I’d describe it.
What about a POW? Or the couple in Joshua Tree? Where do they fall on this perverbial suicide scale?

Understandable yes, excusable, no.

That’s honestly a very tough question to answer.
I don’t really think there is a right answer here.
Tons of variables involved

I watched a very good friend bury her 15 year old son last year, who was one of my sons best friends, and I have never seen so much grief in one place, it was almost tangible, and I knew in that moment that if I lost my son I’d be done for, I’m not that strong.
