Why don't we have highly regarded philosophers anymore?

Like a Plato or Socrates
Think the world would be a better place if we did.

All of today's best philosophers post on the OT.

Isn't that what modern theoretical physicists are? I'd say Hawking is that guy.

We do, they write Country songs.
God is Great Beer Is Good People are Crazy.

IMO, these guys were intellectually superior to those around them so people respected the two because of that intelligence.
Today - everybody thinks they are Plato and Socrates in the intelligence department.

We do. His name is Donald John Trump and his best philosophical treatise is The Art of the Deal.

WFB explained it many years ago. Plato and Socrates (and other famous philosophers) existed in a time when the whole set of 'knowable things' was very small. Therefore, a great mind could know perhaps half of everything that was knowable.
Today the set of knowable things is much too large for a human to become expert in more than 1% of all knowledge that exists.

Probably because philosophy itself isn't held in high esteem.

Hawking is not much of a philosopher. Out of the physicists alive today, I'd say Roger Penrose is clearly the most gifted in terms of being able to think philosophically.
The string theorists are all hopeless over-fitting engineers.

There are no original thoughts anymore.
Everything has already been considered.
If you think you have an original idea, you will find out someone has already beat you to it.

Jacques Derrida happened, and now no respectable person wants to be a philosopher anymore.
I kid... a little bit... but existentialism and continental philosophy really is absurd and ridiculous. No sane person should want to have anything to do with that crap.
For the last few centuries, the British had the best tradition in philosophy, but after WWII the socialist, nanny-state PC culture of the U.K. just killed everything in the realm of free thinking.
The best philosophers of today are probably around Stanford and Silicon Valley.

The same reason politicians are no longer called the solons of government anymore.
From Merriam-Webster - solon: a wise and skillful lawgiver.
It's an intelligence deficiency in both cases.

Not to be disagreeable, but we do have Maxine Waters.

Science killed philosophy roughly around the turn of the 20th century.
NOTE: I am talking about systematic philosophy dealing with topics like epistemology and the philosophy of mind, etc. The stuff that the greats like Hume and Kant used to argue about.
There's plenty of political philosophy (socialism) and "ethics" (SJW's) but very little real philosophy anymore.

Because people with liberal arts degrees are losers

You realize they executed Socrates, right?
The general population has never been particularly fond of revolutionary thinkers during their time. Nietzsche was practically a nobody until years after his death.
In short, it wouldn’t surprise me for someone we’ve never heard to be a household name a hundred years from now.

I'm not sure what you mean. There are a ton of scientists across various disciplines who provide very interesting and important philosophical arguments.
There is just so many more disciplines that one rarely is just a philosopher.
Just read Nassim Taleb's twitter. He may be famous for his analytical skills but he is ruthless when it comes to some troubling trends in academia regarding the philosophy of science.

Yes but it seems that philosophers don't become 'highly regarded' until after they are dead.
