Tony dead at end of episode.

It wasn't the Russians
I thought it was New York through Patsy Parisi
The meeting between Tony and Carmela and the Parisis in the Soprano home was foreshadowing. IIRC, Mrs. Parisi was eyeing everything in the living room up and down and Patsy was clearly uncomfortable
He had the motive(brother being whacked) and knew where Tony would be via his son/Meadow

Tony died, I wanted to believe he lived but everything points to him getting shot in back of the head.
Good analysis of sopranos ending

Pretty much. In an earlier episode, Tony or somebody said New York outnumbered New Jersey by something like 6 to 1 so no way they just simply roll over after Phil gets killed, especially since Jersey's leadership is mostly gone. They just strung Tony along while they co-opted Patsy and probably Paulie.
Plus, they killed Phil in a pretty gruesome way in front of his family so the final scene would be complete payback.

frick David Chase, Tony died. The whole season they were saying things about getting shot like "They say you never even know when you get whacked." Plus the scene where silvio is at dinner and a dude at the table gets murdered out of nowhere. No one noticed him.
The whole season was a setup to your lights just going out abruptly; much like the ending
ETA: David Chase said Tony didn't die

I know.
I guess that's what I want to believe but its still amazing that no one from the Russian organization picked up on anything from their fallen comrade.
he definitely bought it cause if he had lived the Soprano crew would have a heap of shite to deal with.

Yeah, I don't know why people ignore that.

By the guy in the members only jacket?
Yes.
This.
That (I believe) was the loudest use of music in the series. Every other time I can think of them using music, somebody is getting whacked.
Everything about that scene leads you to ONLY conclude that he gets killed. For me it was the music. I thought "oh shite" every time a family member walked into the diner. Worst being the drawn out Meadow. They let your mind wander as she parks her car and walks in. So many tight shots are used that in every other movie or TV show you know someone is dead. Then "who the frick is that a-hole" as the guy walks into the bathroom.
The cut to black was OK the longer I think about it. The audience would have been horrified and mad to see a shot of Tonys entire family covered suddenly in blood and brains as Tony gets whacked. Meadow's face covered with red spray like Silvio when the guy I don't remember got whacked. The audience is just left to fill in the blanks.

Ran out of production money at a very weird point of The episode

I never watched the Sopranos but my dad was an avid fan of it and I will never forget the loud and very angry, "WHAT THE frick KIND OF ENDING IS THAT?!" that erupted when that show ended.
I was a senior in high schoolwhen the finale aired. We had a viewing party with my friends, my parents and their friends. We had the same reaction.
Looking back it goes to show what a transcendent show this really was when you have people from all different age groups fixated on the same piece of art.
Truly the GOAT

I think in David Chase’s mind it was crystal clear.

It is not an opinion; he died.
