My family utilized all the family tracing services availbale and my ancestors came from England and landed in Bama.. fought for the CSA.. I feel no shame.

My 1st ancestor in the America's back in the mid-late 1600's had a slave. In his will he set her and her kids up with a house, a stream of income, and sets of papers declaring their freedom.
If I remember correctly, he died in 1692, thus making his slaves' and their descendants free citizens of the Crown almost 100 years before there even was a United States of America.

After my mom passed away in January, we found all kinds of family stuff she had hidden away. Come to find out, one of my great grandfathers was a sheriff and leader of the local KKK. I found it interesting, but I bear no shame for what he did. Has no bearing on my life whatsoever.

My great great great grandfather owned over 100 slaves and owned the Destrehan plantation. He had 11 of them heads cut off and put on a pike on the ms river after a slave revolt. Then in his final will he freed them all and instructed them all to receive a parcel of land but the courts struck it down. His nephew also owned a plantation that he lost in the civil war after he became financially ruined trying to fund the war. The state took his land around Baton Rouge and built what is known today as Louisiana State University.

Don't feel bad, Larry. Here is the slave schedule from the 1860 census listing my great-great-grandfather (Spencer M. Bankston) and two of my great-great-great uncles (Willis and George Bankston) and the number of slaves that they owned. See? I'm not ashamed!
