In that situation, I think so. Because staying in for the National Anthem does not put you or anyone else in front of criticism.
I don't see the issue.

Question: Re: Villaneueva being on the field for the anthem:
Tomlin: Like I said, I was looking for a hundred percent participation. We’re going to be respectful of our football team. Man, these are divisive times in the United States. and it’s a shame, but it is, but we’re not politicians. We’re coaches and professional athletes. If those of us are individuals choose to participate in politics in some way, I’m going to be supportive of that, butut when we come out of locker rooms, we come out of locker rooms to play football games, and to be quite honest with you I didn’t appreciate our football team being drug into politics this weekend. And I’m sure that’s a global perspective. But, we’re blessed to do this for a living, and so with that blessing comes responsibility. We understand that. We understand that we’re given a platform that’s a unique one. Many of us are called to maybe do things that we wouldn’t normally do because of that platform, where people apply pressure to us to do things because of that platform. The bottom line is we chose not to play ball today in that regard. Maybe we will, but today, we just said no.

For Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin, being “respectful of our football team” trumped the right of Steelers offensive tackle Alejandro Villanueva to show respect for the national anthem.

So why is Villanueva's rights to expression more important than say Ryan Shazier?
Be a upper middle class white dude, go to an ethnic projects, inform them why they still live in said projects, and get back to me on how people handle being told they suck by others who didn't go through similar situations.

It isn't. But for someone who has done more for this country than 99.9% of players in that locker room, he should have never been called out by Tomlin. He gets his pass.

Here's why... Tomlin is airing out his displeasure to the media like a terrible manager would over a veteran standing for the allegiance while he's let players kneel for two years. If he has such a problem with all this bullshite, on both sides, he should've bitched out the others who would kneel before this. Not a ranger veteran.
I suggest you read his press conference transcript and avoid slanted articles from Fox News, MSN, etc.

His logic is to not let anyone make a big stink about one of his players doing whatever during the anthem. Good or bad. Villanueva came out, which made it a story.
This is 100% on Tomlin IMO. He's now created the stir, an actual issue to go back and forth on.

Black on brown crime. How will the media handle this?

His stance was that nobody would be visibly participating in the charade.

villanueva isn't just a west point grad. he has a bronze star for valor, meaning his actions during combat literally saved lives. shameful for tomlin to go after him over this.

I don't see a problem with this statement at all.

It bugs me that the Steelers and Tomlin did EXACTLY what the MSB wants - just play football and leave the political statements off the field - yet they're still criticizing Tomlin/the team.

I have zero issues with that statement. Holy terrible headline Batman.

That's not his point, but you know that.
He's talking about the charade that National Anthem has become in the NFL.

I think Tomlin thought he found a solution to keep his team out of the political media headlines, but now because of Villanueva(not saying he was wrong), the Steelers have moved to the front.

Yea he never went after him at all. He was speaking about the decision as a whole.
Posted on 9/25/17 at 11:40 am to Jcorye1
This is exactly the problem with news today. They are looking to make this an issue because they know that people will likely not read the actual transcript of events.

Too bad most of the retards here have already made up their mind

I am saying though, the kneeling situation has now made a big deal out of an army ranger standing for the anthem.....
