"What to do now?" probably needs it's own thread. If it wasn't for Irma this would be a much bigger story. Not sure people grasp the depth and implications of this.

You can add a fraud alert via the following link:
Experian Fraud Center
You may want to do this for TransUnion and Equifax also. It will require additional verification when trying to access your credit.

Saw this in the comment section of the finance.yahoo efx message board:
Probably good advice.
quote:
How we can protect our personal finance where banks let allow criminals to open bank accounts on-line. We should have a federal regulation that nobody can open a bank account or a credit card until personally visit the bank branch and submit two forms of photo identification as prerequisite to activate. Bank should keep copy of those identifications for future purposes including safe guard of person who open account. Why we are so slack to implement such a simple but strong procedure.
Probably good advice.

I got my email and when I go to the page it says I have to wait another couple of days...
They are pathetic.

We literally typed in GargoyleNutz and 6 random Numbers, and it said we were affected. lol.
Take that for what it's worth.

I put a credit freeze on equifax, experian and transunion this morning. The first two were easy and done online. Transunion was easy until I clicked submit, and after ten minutes of watching the wheel spin I stopped and did it by phone.
Good article, scroll down for links to the three agencies.

Appreciate the link.
I just placed a credit freeze for my wife and me at all three bureaus.
Equifax was free. The other two ended up costing me $40.00. I have no plans to use my personal credit any time soon and neither does my wife, so this seems like the best solution for us at this moment.

I just did the exact same thing tonight to hopefully make my needle a little too difficult to utilize in the 143 million person haystack.

It says I was a victim, what do I need to do?

Tried to freeze our reports tonight....Equifax site is down, TransUnion's freeze site is down, and Experian let me put in all the info, charged me 5 bucks then said they couldn't process it and I must mail my info in. What a shite show
Edit: Experian did refund the $5. I'll keep trying.

I find it quite disturbing that this isn't a bigger deal

This breach is so big and encompases so much info the credit agencies are going to be forced to find a solution from their side, if not Equifax is toast.
As no one ever agreed to let them collect the info in the first place there is no small print for them to hide behind, lawyers nationwide must be salivating at this oppurtunity.

Appreciate this thread. Great reminder to freeze my credit as well.

UPDATE: I got my free services from equifax promised because I was affected.
It is horrible. It says that you can do a SocSec check and this part of the package does not work. It says that their is no acct. activity to report and I know that is a lie because I just took out a loan. It does nothing really but show you your report for equifax.
I think we should all sue for their poor response to this; and their free crappy product doing nothing to help.
Also: a kind warning to all those thinking a credit freeze is the best act. I have had to do this years ago and it was a nightmare; UNfreezing and proper inquiries for car loans and what not were not able to access.

I'm sure it is a pain to unfreeze but seems like the only option at this point. I hope Equifax goes fricking bankrupt from a class action lawsuit. Freezing my accounts has been the biggest pain in the arse.

does it say you were impacted?

The other day they were saying Donald Duck as Duck 123456 was affected. Today I just did 7 randoms and they all said not affected. (Before every other made up one was affected) From John Wayne to Penelope Pitstop and Donald Duck.

I had people I was trying to get loans from over YEARS tell me only one report and FICO would pull. I would call the two credit reporting agencies. They would tell me all is well, the fraud alert/freeze was lifted (after a half an hour at least on the phone) and the bank guy would try to pull the next day and he still got nothing.
I am telling you it is flawed. It took me over 8 months to get all three credit reports and FICO scores reporting. I had to fax them everything but blood work and a urine sample and also call them. I am not freezing I will monitor with MyFICO.com.
