Thanks for the link.
Looks like both me and my wife are potentially impacted by this security breach.

The "offer" to monitor credit is not from Equifax, it is also a scam that is part of the breach. Do NOT put your real information into the site.
No matter what you input, the response is the same. Your browser should have detected the bad security certificate when you entered your information.
Per Brian Krebs, who broke the story and is the leading online security resource.
Also, Krebs also says credit monitoring is worthless in any case, freezing your credit is the only worthwhile solution. See linked story, but comments have the most valuable information, including the discovery of the phishing from the Equifax fake website.

Equifax yesterday: "We see you had 1 late credit card payment 4 years ago, sorry you can't buy a house with a competitive rate for another 3 years"
Equifax today: "We exposed 143 million+ database records in July (and our execs sold their stock the next day then waited 2 months to tell anybody). shite happens, kthxbai!"
See my post above, do NOT use the fake monitoring website to see if you're affected.

If you weren't affected before, you are probably affected now after using the fake site.

I believe there is a site to check whether or not you're info was breached, but you're also opting out of a class action suit by doing so. Watch what you're signing up for.

Wrong, some people were notified that they weren't included in the breach.

I wasn't affected by the breach but my husband was.
What should we do now to monitor his data?

Take off the tin foil hat. The site is part of an official release by the company.

equifax is definitely going to double down after a massive breach and link a phishing website on its official release

Read this. It looks like the place to see if you were effected is a hot mess/bogus?
CNet tested it and put in random numbers and fake names. Also: once you return to take their 'free' monitoring services you sign a waiver to not sue them.

This is becoming a case study in how to not manage a crisis.

This is 40% of Americans. Time to freeze your credit. Also, that website has multiple reports of generating random responses: people entering the same information and getting different results.
EDIT: I recommend at the least issuing a fraud alert to the 3 credit companies. This will require them to obtain additional verification before your credit can be accessed.

How do you freeze your credit? Is it a simple process that I can undo quickly?

quote:I had to do this years ago and it was such a huge pain in the arse. They lie when they say this. If you are trying to buy a car/get credit some things can just block whomever and not make them obtain more info. I wouldn't do this again! It took me 8 months of calling to get two of the agencies to REPORT MY CREDIT score and report; because of this. It was a nightmare.

All 3 are corrupt BS. I say they all change or just have one agency. It is nothing but a big scheme to get people to buy credit monitoring. No one should have to pay to see their credit scores.

When I did the last name and 6 SS numbers bit on their page. It said I was effected. So this is what I get free
