Washington opposed political parties and you see how that went.

I am not in favor of building any new confederate war statues. However, I am not in favor of tearing them down either. They are both art and historical, whether you agree with those who erected them or not. Attempting to re-write history never ends well.
This is my stance. Whether you agree with them or not, they are there and there is no reason to tear them down. Use them as an educational tool. Erect monuments to competing viewpoints nearby.
Removing symbols of history is for the weak-minded.

They conveniently left off the end of the letter.

As regards the erection of such a monument as is contemplated; my conviction is, that however grateful it would be to the feelings of the South, the attempt in the present condition of the Country, would have the effect of retarding, instead of accelerating its accomplishment; & of continuing, if not adding to, the difficulties under which the Southern people labour. All I think that can now be done, is to aid our noble & generous women in their efforts to protect the graves & mark the last resting places of those who have fallen, & wait for better times.

Wise words. But Robert E Lee himself won't change anyone's opinion.

The Coliseum isn't a statue honoring the people that put and fought for people to be slaves though now is it? How can you not see the difference?

Sounds like General Lee was a pretty righteous dude. We should totally put a statue of him up somewhere.

You are really dumb.

I'm sort of with Lee in all of this, but most of those monuments were paid for by private organizations after his death. Personally, I never quite understood why New Orleans put one up since he was never really a part of New Orleans history....he did spend time with the Washington Artillery. But a lot of these monuments have been up since the 1880's and 1900.....why the big fuss today? You Yankees and scalawags just want to keep rubbing the fact that the South lost in Southerners faces?
Overall, those monuments never bothered anyone and then some jack off named Dylan Roof does an unspeakable horror....never mentions the Confederacy or the "South" and then all of you progressives get your panties all in a wad about these pieces of metal. It ain't about racism...it's about rubbing it in the face of the conservative white guy from the South. Makes you feel superior...huh?

Correct.
It's just about history.

No, it's about racism and oppression. And reminding African Americans of their place.

So a monument actually does that to you? An inanimate statue? They oppress you?

But underlying it all was one rationale: That the war had ended, and the South needed to move on and avoid more upheaval.
If they'd have left this out, I might agree with their point more.
The news needs to report facts and stop trying to interpret things.

Not to me, but why should we keep statues on public grounds whose sole purpose was to promote racism?

Oh, I know. That's why I found it hilarious that those people that tore down the statue in Durham were kicking and spitting and flipping the bird to an inanimate object like it was "ALIVE". How delusional does one have to be to act like that?
