quote:

At the center of the “Unite the Right” rally that turned deadly in Charlottesville last weekend was a protest of the city’s plan to remove a statue of Robert E. Lee. White supremacists, neo-Nazis and others have made monuments to the Confederate commanding general a flashpoint — at times marching to keep them standing.

But Lee himself never wanted such monuments built.

“I think it wiser,” the retired military leader wrote about a proposed Gettysburg memorial in 1869, “…not to keep open the sores of war but to follow the examples of those nations who endeavored to obliterate the marks of civil strife, to commit to oblivion the feelings engendered.”

In his writings, Lee cited multiple reasons for opposing such monuments, questioning the cost of a potential Stonewall Jackson monument, for example. But underlying it all was one rationale: That the war had ended, and the South needed to move on and avoid more upheaval.

Let's be real about the people that want to keep these statues. It's not about respecting and honoring history. How can it be when they expressly said honoring them with statues would create the division we see today?

Another dishonest OP.

If only that's what this was really about.

It's OK. Your opportunity is here. Your ilk are silencing opposition. You are winning, but you still aren't happy.

Where have I seen this before?

Sight specifically what is dishonest. What is factually incorrect?

You have no facts to back up your point of view so you deflect to Muh statues and say stop whining.

These are Lee's own words, it's not hard. This is real news.

Ok, I'll be real. I have a strong suspicion you are an "inside the Beltway" establishment Washingtonian who probably wants these "headaches" to go away.

I don't give two shits about the statues, just think it's stupid to be taking them down. Especially the way its happening.

I am not in favor of building any new confederate war statues. However, I am not in favor of tearing them down either. They are both art and historical, whether you agree with those who erected them or not. Attempting to re-write history never ends well.

The division is created by your side's evil and hatred. You are creating the division. Statues are inanimate and therefore incapable of causing anything. People are dying and going to hell; you should be more concerned about that than a statue.

I don't care about the monuments but if people want to honor the fallen or remember the struggle of the Civil War, that's their prerogative. Whether Lee or anyone else who fought during the war agree or not is irrelevant. I'd argue that Lee wouldn't have wanted any monuments built regardless of the outcome or the justness of the cause, as he saw it; that's the type of man he was.

So Lee wasn't an a-hole who declared, "Damn right build my statue, I'm a golden god!"

I thought the left loved the arts? Can't they simply appreciate them for their artistic value?
