In my near 50 years I don't remember a world reaction to a death bigger than Diana's.

The Ole Miss football program.

It's plausible that this death had greater real impact than Diana's:

Elvis or Diana probably had the largest impact globally
JFK Jr's death was a big deal at the time
Owen Hart's death shook the entire wrestling industry and people still talk about it to this day. I had no idea at the time how he was universally loved by pretty much everyone in the business
Edit: I would add John Lennon too. It's a toss up between him, Elvis, and Diana

A bigger historical figure was Winston Churchill.

Andre the Giant he was 700 lbs

Steve Jobs was a big one. Jackson and Diana are big ones as well.

Saddam. Name a death that has caused more upheaval in the last 50 years.

Churchill was like 90 when he died. I don't really count people who were elderly and died basically due to old age, but rather people who were relatively young and died unexpectedly in their prime.

Has to be Diana, right?
Globally? Without question. Elvis might be competitive in the U.S.
Michael Jackson and Prince are up there, but not quite Tier 1.

Good call, although I think he is more in the Prince and Michael Jackson category - I don't think he's in Diana or Elvis territory.

Your interpretation, while shaky, is admirable I guess. I just went with the parameters set forth by the OP. Big death since JFK. Churchill fits both and is a lion of a historical figure.
