The couple said they wanted to take their son across the Atlantic for nucleoside bypass therapy, but specialists at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London, where Charlie was being cared for, said the treatment was experimental and would not help.
They paid tribute to their 'absolute warrior' less than a fortnight before his first birthday on the steps of the High Court, with father Chris saying: 'Mummy and Daddy love you so much Charlie, we always have and we always will and we are so sorry that we couldn't save you.
'We had the chance but we weren't allowed to give you that chance. Sweet dreams baby. Sleep tight our beautiful little boy.'
Charlie's parents added they believed their son might have been saved if experimental therapy had been tried sooner.
Ms Yates said time had been 'wasted', adding 'had Charlie been given the treatment sooner he would have had had the potential to be a normal, healthy little boy.'
Doctors at Great Ormond Street did not agree, with lawyers representing the hospital saying the 'clinical picture' six months ago had shown irreversible damage to Charlie's brain.

That's so fricked up. This is the socialized medicine people are begging for in this country.

This whole situation was one fricked up mess. Odds are that any treatment given in the United States would not have helped, but as a parent I would try anything if it there was even a slight chance that it could help my kid. I don't understand why the Brits would not let them leave on their own dime and come to the U.S., other than it would put the NHS in a bad light and not give some pencil-pusher a power trip.

The state's ability and determination for self preservation will win out every single time because they have the power of life and death in their hands. They operate with impunity.

Government involvment in healthcare decisions will result in this outcome no matter what country or century you live in.

Other than being kept from leaving I don't know much about this who ordeal. Why couldn't they leave the country?

Absolutely frickED.
I'm not a parent and even I can tell you I would go to ANY lengths to give my potential future child even a .01% higher chance of survival.

I have a question...if he had been able to come over here who would pay the medical bills?

If the treatment was experimental and part of a study, it would have been free.

Because a court said so.

The government wouldn't let them remove their child from the hospital. There was never a good reason other than the treatment was a long shot and the government didn't want to prolong any potential suffering. Keep in mind, under socialist medicine, the government owns you and your children.
Trump, the leader of the most powerful country in the world, wanted Charlie here.
The U.S. Congress voted to grant Charlie permanent U.S. residence.
The internet raised about $1.75 million to pay for his treatment.
A doctor in the U.S. agreed to admit Charlie and treat him.
The Pope said that Charlie should be allowed to be treated in the U.S.
But the socialist healthcare system of the UK said no, so that was that. A child must die to glorify socialism.

My son has mitochondrial disease. Though we are very fortunate that he is doing well, this story is absolutely terrifying to me. I hope every person who had a hand in the chain of cruel and egocentric decisions made for that baby all roast in hell. Sooner rather than later preferably.

I would have been at that hospital with an arsenal of weapons trying to remove my child. There would be a shootout before I allowed this bullshite to happen.

That's exactly what I was thinking.

I think the family had raised the money through Go Fund Me and there was a doctor here who would treat.
